I have the
Bose system
but hate the headunit. I realize it was probably designed years ago and no one thought about MP3's or ipods but come on. I want to change out the headunit but retain the speaker aray. Has anyone done this without freaking out the computer? Does an adapter harness even exist? Someone lay some good news on me please!
Bad news!!! I think you're stuck with that wonderful boat anchor Porsche calls a radio... I've seen worse...
Santa Fe: Please point MG in the right direction. I have a vague suspicion that this issue may have been addressed here previously, and could probably be discovered by an assiduous "searcher."
Yes, this has been discussed numerous times. One thread someone did $10K in damage messing with the fiber optics.
Its also been said that if Porsche wanted you to listen to Ipods, they would have provided the ability.
Turn off the stereo and listen to that flat-6

SF: Thanks for helping out. I never seem to have much luck when I search, and you seem to do it almost effortlessly.
Santa Fe ... he's da man!!!
I search and get 1000 hits
As often as that how to kill a cayman thread surfaces, the truth behind it is not that it can't be done, you just can't go around in your car without care and damage the harness. The installer for obiwans car was cocky and ripped the harness, thus making the car unusable without a new harness. This happens, and unfortunately Cayman harnesses aren't like Escalade and some other GM harnesses, which are also one piece but can be ordered for a few hundred dollars.
That being said, at this point the only way to keep the
Bose system
and change the headunit at this point is to replace the head unit, run new speaker cables, and a new amplifier. 2006 and newer P-cars, even with
Bose
, don't show any errors if you remove the CDR-24 or PCM2.1, that's why you see so many of them on ebay; I've contacted the sellers to make sure they were taken from
Bose
cars without a
hitch
. On '05 997's you had to move the cdr-24 to a diff. location by extending a fiber-optic cable; which posed some danger in the install for over-confident installers.
That being said, I myself wouldn't change the headunit on a
Bose
car; the Dension/Dice kits are pretty much done and shipping now, and you can do bluetooth via aftermarket kits, or use an earpiece.
The electronics in the Porsche really aren't all that complicated; they just cost a heck of a lot (money and time) to replace!
Hey, thanks everyone. Maybe as time goes by more options will surface.
