I've searched the site for Bose comments specifically regarding the playing of 5.1 recorded CD's and can't find any. The Bose (automotive) web-site talks about the surround mode simulating 5.1 when surround is turned on (hi,med,lo settings) playing stereo CD's but also states it will "faithfully reproduce" 5.1 recordings. Has anyone actually successfully played a SACD, DVD-A or other 5.1 format and had it work? I popped in a copy of the Eagles Farewell tour 1, which worked fine on my home system, video and 5.1, but I got the "Stop" message in the Cayman. As reported on other threads the "stop" message is somewhat common with a few remedies such as tuning to FM then back to CD, hit the eject button, etc. This is the only disc I've seen with this message suggesting the format is wrong. One of the most exciting features of the Bose option is listening to 5.1 recordings in actual 5.1, at least that was my understanding reading the literature. Before I go out and purchase CD's for experiments I was hoping someone else has been down this path.
I don't have the Bose system so I could not test, perhaps others do? I know that playing MP3 files requires PCM, not just Bose, this may be a similar situation so hopefully someone with PCM or PCM+Bose will test as well to tell us what their system does. Good question!
Hmm..."faithfully reproduce" 5.1 recordings? I have BOSE on my CS but I've never tried to play anything other than stereo CDs, and I seriously doubt it plays anything else... If an audio system plays SACD, DVD-Audio, etc, the manufacturer would definitely make the consumers aware of the extra effort (and extra cost).
You gotta get a Japanese car if you want that kinda features
, Becker, or any division of harman that I know of, doesn't offer an automotive solution that plays SACD's or DVD-Audio. Even their top of the line solutions in the 7series and S550 only support 2 channels of audio, but they offer their 7.1 signal processing, which is digital and done at 96khz, so it's a bit better than the Bose which I believe uses analog Dolby pro logic II to give your stereo music surround seperation.
Thanks for the replies. I've got a query into Bose. As far as I can tell their web-site implies the system decodes 5.1. The link below is from their site under Cayman S.

The Bose system in Porsche cars play regular 2-channel CD audio ONLY. They are not compatible with multi-channel SACD or DVD-A.
