BTW are you interested in a slightly used P-car that spent most of it's time beginning in early August 2017 in Houston.

But I have decided that repairing EVs is not in the cards for me.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

High performance EV or Hybrid cars need to ramp up the voltage to deliver all that power so quickly and still not need 2" diameter cables to do it.
Well this is going to drive the price up. 1100 new cars is a lot in a normal year. These days this would be several dealership's inventory for the entire year.
Glad the souls are ok.

https://www.cnn.com/2022/02/17/tech/...ars/index.html
There are salvors who do this stuff for a living. Very lucrative. remember the huge container ship getting crossways in the Suez Canal. The salvors made billions....
Oh-oh. We had another thread on this very subject.....
".....Lithium-ion batteries in the
electric cars
on board the vehicle carrier Felicity Ace have caught fire...."
https://gcaptain.com/felicity-ace-ca...-mid-atlantic/
I would expect the smart guys have already built the bridges to the salvors in anticipation of an eventual liquidation, and the ship owners, and car shipping agents have already began to deal with their insurance carriers in anticipation of a complete write off of the cargo.
In other words, the horse is at the entrance to the barn, ready to take off......big money in play...
Well, we really don't know yet. Depends on the damage incurred. Maybe, let's say, some or all of the Porsches did not burn but were affected by smoke and water. I don't think they could ever be delivered to their purchasers as new but they could certainly be sold off as is, as shown at a price by the salvors with no warranty by Porsche, who would then submit an insurance claim. My point is that all this has been transpiring since the ship caught fire. I imagine people and companies have been approaching the salvage companies to get an inside track. These ships are huge and carry thousands of cars. Perhaps some have been totaled by the fire but it may be that other numbers are only affected by the smoke, provided the ship doesn't sink. Here is the latest:
https://gcaptain.com/lithium-ion-bat...ng-fire-alive/
Naw...nobody would do that...never...not at all.
BTW are you interested in a slightly used P-car that spent most of it's time beginning in early August 2017 in Houston. Cheap...
Looking at the photos of that ship I would be very surprised if there is anything salvageable there. the exterior panels of the ship are showing heat damage, and those plates are a good inch thick. the inside of that ship got very very very hot for a long time.
anything above a deck that burned is roasted, only if there is a deck below the fire that it didn't penetrate would have anything maybe salvageable, and given the loading system for those ships (roll on roll off) the lower decks would be less likely to have cars on them in my opinion. Anything above that fire-line is scrap metal in my opinion.
Joule is a measure of energy, equal to a Watt (though with a time value added)
The simplest conversion that would make sense to someone who is mechanically inclined is that 1 Joule is equal to 0.7377 foot-pounds of torque.
Edit: I found this better written explanation on Google:
Watts are defined as 1 Watt = 1 Joule per second (1W = 1 J/s) which means that 1 kW = 1000 J/s. A Watt is the amount of energy (in Joules) that an electrical device (such as a light) is burning per second that it’s running. So a 60W bulb is burning 60 Joules of energy every second you have it turned on.
Icelia,
Thanks for the definition. How do Joules translate into production cars from a power and safety standpoint. I remember that in the early Audi and Porsche hybrid LeMan era a few years ago, there was talk of who had more Joules and the risk factor of working on the cars. And Porsche having the highest "Joules" with their 919.
Everything on that ship is going to be scrap - including the ship at this point. It's probably about even odds the ship sinks before the fire is out. Otherwise it will get towed to somewhere in the far East and broken up for scrap.
Think of Joules again as available instantaneous torque. Good for winning races.
Also think of Joules as potential 'instant death'.. Good for killing mechanics.
High performance EV or Hybrid cars need to ramp up the voltage to deliver all that power so quickly and still not need 2" diameter cables to do it. So, they have a lot of energy that can cause a lot of damage very quickly.
If that energy goes to the wrong place, like a human body; or even to other parts of the car that aren't correctly grounded etc. you have serious problems.
Fires on ships can easily get hot enough that the steel starts burning. That kind of a fire can't be put out with water because the water breaks down to hydrogen and oxygen due to the intense heat, it's over 5000 degrees F. The only way to put that fire out is to wait, or use a lot of CO2 all at once.
What a mess. While we won't know what caused the fire for quite some time the discussion of EV vs. ICE will be kicking in high gear.
Some of you may find this report from Volvo of interest which compares their XC40 EV vs. XC40 ICE powered car from an environmental standpoint. While I haven't gotten thru it just yet, so far it's interesting reading. Would be an interesting thread topic.
Here is a link to the report. Too big to attach.
https://www.volvocars.com/images/v/-...eport-xc40.pdf
After reading just the ES seems if I use my XC40 R Design for less than @91k miles I will be less polluting than the comparable BEV XC40. Sweet! In addition I won't have to worry about my ICE XC40 going all The Torch and yelling "Flame on" in my garage.
The Volvo sits next to the 996 in the garage and I would prefer no unplanned deconstruction occurring in that environment.
^^^^ This is true !!
I was sent to "Porsche Hybrid Training" over a decade and a half ago when the Cayenne Hybrid first came out...
Each Dealership had to have a trained tech or they were not allowed to sell a Hybrid..When A Hybrid came into the shop, I was responsible to attack a Hazmat sign to the drivers window and rope off the car in the shop. No one was allowed inside the ropes unless I was in there with them to instruct them.
Specific guidelines and safety procedures had to be followed. and if the high voltage battery was to be removed, I had to gear up like a Bomb Removal Squad..lol
We also had to build a Special High Voltage Battery Storage Facility , encase we had to remove and store a defective EV Battery. A defective/damaged High Voltage Battery was treated like a Bomb !!
Its going to be fascinating as more analysis and documents are produced regarding the topic. Add in biofuel and more eventual hybrid adoption, we will have plenty of ways to improve the environment effectively and efficiently.
We all know that what gets measured will get fixed. Problem is that we havent been "measuring".
Many of these GT cars were headed to the NE. A lot of upset people in NY area
At least they get a good story out of it. IMO it makes their 992 even more special, albiet delayed about 6 months.
Back in the day, we installed a large UPS system for our computer center. When the techs performed preventative maintenance on the system, their tool kit included a wooden cane (one with a loop/hook on the end).
I did ask, why a wooden cane was included in the tool kit.
Two techs were required, one to open the unit and perform the inspection, and a second one holding the wooden cane, which would be used to pull the other tech off the equipment if the situation required.
Ahhh, the good old days.
Folks, the narrative on Petroleum vs. Biofuel vs. Electric vs. Hybrid is changing before our eyes. Europe woke up this morning to news none of us want to see and now realize how vulnerable they are to energy shortages. Everything energy related will be re-thought. One thing is certain, ICE isn't going away anytime soon.
Environmentalism will give way to Pragmatism over the near term.
Spot on.
I expect the discussion will include pipelines, fracking, domestic petroleum production, nuclear power plant licensing, alternative fuels......also potential realignment of the US Congress may be in play.....
i was at Porsche west Houston returning the header bolts that I had bought. Anyway In addition that they only had used cars for sale, all new ones sitting in the showroom where already sold. One of the salesman told me that 10 cars were theirs and off course they had been sold already. I read somewhere that the majority of those cars where headed to Texas.
Even with Porsche headquarters being in Atlanta, the two big dealerships have virtually no inventory for new vehicles - mostly the Porsche SUVs, Panamera, etc. Seems like they're reselling mostly preowned car to get by along with service. Service has always been a way for dealership to get through tough times.
All of the Ford and Chevrolet dealers are doing the same.
Dodge/Jeep/Ram/Chrysler seem to have best new inventory these days in my local area. Maybe because no one wants those vehicles.
Yep, interesting case study for the history books.
"Just In Time" manufacturing and inventory management worked extremely well until the world's leaders decided to have the first global synchronized economic shutdown in history, coupled with sending out free money to the masses.
The shutdown caused manufacturing bottlenecks, the free money caused inflationary demand. The law of "unintended consequences" due to policy responses is alive and well.
Add into the equation a ship carrying newly manufactured supply being eliminated from the supply chain, price forces will continue their upward bias.
Interesting times folks.
Good news is it will eventually end as bottlenecks go away and we trend towards the next recession mitigating demand. Your guess is as good as mine when. In the meantime, inflation will persevere whether we like it or not.
Well said! That's why I'm NOT selling my Porsche anytime soon.
Unfortunately, my daughter had an accident at Christmas time in her 2014 Volvo XC60. The car kept her safe, but State Farm considered it a total loss because the airbags deployed. We've spent the last two months trying to find a replacement. Virtually nothing in a 100-200 mile radius within our budget. Athens/Atlanta is a big market for these cars. Most of what is available at the same year, model, and miles is about $2-5K more than what we paid for her car two years ago. Normally, time and depreciation would be in our favor. Not today. All of the Volvos are marked up big time.
Glad she is safe!
I hear you. Not good situation right know if you need another car. Same can be said for the housing market. It will end, but in the meantime we got a mess on our hands. The masses loved the free money, but they certainly don't like the higher prices it helped to create.
This graph tells it all on gasoline. What's more alarming is the rise in food prices and shortages locally. Another problem, is that many businesses can't get anyone to work. Signs up everywhere. Many of them are offering the politically correct "$15/hr" but that doesn't help apparently. It's a consistent theme right now. Maybe the problem is these people are waiting out for Uncle Sam to drop more cash out of his money printing cargo plane?
No question. Numbers suggest that a chunk of younger boomers decided to go into retirement creating the worker shortage. Markets went up, account balances went up, and as humans we extrapolate the near term conditions forward when making projections.
As the macro conditions change and the markets continue their violent rotations as a result of high inflation and rising interest rates, many boomers will come out of retirement when their retirement accounts fall far enough. Happened after 2000-03 bear, happened again after 2007-09 bear and it will ultimately happen again.
Great Wall Street quote..."Don't confuse a bull market for brains."
What's scary is that this graph doesn't factor in the Ukraine/Russia impact. The information stops at Feb15th. Sadly, IMHO it will become worse before it gets better. It's quite amusing that all the "experts" that appear on the news media have "great plans" to get us out of this mess.
I couldn't help but think about a famous quote from Mike Tyson.
He said once, "Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth!"
they will raise the rates, hopefully they dont overshoot. We will be Able to maybe get 5 percent cds again. I bought my first house in 1990, with a great credit score and a 15 year loan 25 percent down my interest rate was 9.9. We have a long way to go. Once rates go up, demand for houses and cars will moderate have seen that picture before.
...and so it ends.

i dont care what those wackos say, this margarita rocks and only $5 at chillis. I tip the bartender well and cash, so Ill always get some extra mph, or free drinks I never paid for. Im a good Catholic.
everything can 🔥 burn. I just want WTI to go to $150 and Ill cash out. I want that blue cobalt X50, courtesy off the Russians.
Go baby go to the moon and back. Californians are going to be paying $8 for a gallon of premium, 😂
Come on go to the sky, I want that cobalt blue X50.
I know a lot of people who are happy to see WTI>$100.
But I bet drilling doesn't immediately increase...except maybe in West TX where there "are no dry holes."
This graph tells me all I need to know about the cycle of WTI:
Anytime someone asks me my "expert" opinion on whether oil prices will go up or down, I answer, "yes."
The experts who predict the price of oil are always correct...until they aren't.
Will WTI go to $150?
I highly doubt it will anytime soon, but maybe some day WAY in the future...when I'm long gone.
Will WTI go up or down?
Yes
Saudi Arabia is closer to Russia...unfortunately Afghanistan is between Russia and Saudi Arabia and it seems that Russian military can't seem to make it through Afghanistan in 1 piece.
Russia could avoid Afghanistan, but that darn country of Turkey is part of NATO.
Maybe Iran needs to be worried.
If I dont get that cobalt blue x50 turbo, Im also investing in Nursing homes and cemeteries. We all are going to die and the senior population is doubling in the next 5 year. I love cemeteries because thats a 24/7 business and we all are going to finish there some way some how.
I expect we'll see renewed discussion of fracking, "drill baby drill", and pipelines. I understand that the US, us, are sitting on the largest deposits of petroleum known on the planet.....
I already worked my *** off. I have assets now. I dont control the world but I can play the game as good as I can. I dont dictate international policies. but you can bet your as? Im going to benefit as much as I can, and yes Cali and the rest of the world can burn If they allow it. Like I say, Im fixing to be 54, I really feel sorry for the younger generations, i dont control the future, but I do control my life.
yes the funeral homes that have their own crematories. I myself want to be cremated, I wrote for my wife to take my friends out to my watering hole and get them drunk. Celebrate that I have gone to a better life. Im going to be like the little Lannister from games of thrones in my next life, I want to be reincarnated into the king of wine and ****
Buddy of mine wanted to be cremated because he couldn't stand the thought of being enclosed in a box. But then I explained to him that his wife would keep him on the mantle, but one day the cleaning lady might accidentally spill him all over the floor....then vacuum him up...changed his mind...
PEOPLE! There are Ukrainians and Russians dying because of a tinplated dictator and all we seem worried about is how much money can be made in the stock market. I find that sad and self serving. I find absolutely nothing funny about the Ukraine situation...
told the wife, if she cant live with everything already paid and over 2 mil in investments thats her prerogative. Every couple of months I get invited to these $200-$300 dinners from small investment firms that want to manage my money. I go to all of them and take my wife. I tell her, you dont have the savy to manage the money, but if I pass you need to pass the assets to One of these companies that will do it for you. At that point
in time Im already gone and god bless. By the way you guys know what is the first thing the ants eat when you pass. Your tongue 👅, so that you cant scream when they eat your behind !!!!
Go baby go. This is almost like winning the lottery. Like Warren buffet said
at most you are going to have 3-5 biggg opportunities in your life and thats when you go big or go home. Pretty soon the guys in Cali are going to be paying $10 per gallon for premium.
I was at a multi brand Dealership today. Upstate New York
They loss zero Porsche, (10) VW, (3) Audi R8s.
Most of the cars on the boat were headed south.
As of this afternoon the shipping company's insurance is going to bring that ship up.
As of today the total lost & salvage to raise that ship combined will be $2 Billion.
Reports are it went down in @9,000 foot deep water! That would be EXPENSIVE. My question is why? Six days of fire then sea water...nothing left to reclaim, but maybe I'm missing something here.
I'll bet if you unravel the thread far enough, you will come to "Lithium Ion battery"......and maybe bunker fuel, although I don't happen to know what her propulsion system is....in other words I can't think of a single business reason to raise the ship beyond those. Certainly they have insurance, maybe there is an enviro clause......Euros take environmental seriously. I also don't know where she sank, if she was in Azores territorial waters....
Bunker fuel turns into a jelly like soild below about 80 degrees F, it needs to be heated to 120-150F in order to pump it to the engines. It isn't going anywhere.
My guess would be that they are raising the ship for environmental reasons. Could they be on the hook for the cost of bring it up as to not pollute the ocean?
Porsche says sure. Tell you what, we will do 5 cents on the dollar on that GT3 but you gotta go get it this week. We want it gone by Sunday morning. This is non-negotiable. Chop chop, clock is ticking.
I believe there would be insurance held by the shipping company against environmental impact. There is precedent for car carriers going amiss.

How they salvaged another car carrier than sank, but I don't see this happening in 9,000 ft deep.
Capsized Car-Carrying Cargo Ship Cut in Half as Salvage Continues (caranddriver.com)
And they actually cut this one into several pieces.
I went up to St Simon's Island (about an hour drive for me) just to watch that operation for a bit. It was super cool.
I'd be surprised if they are salvaging anything from 9000ft though, not worth the effort.

I found this video on how the big car hauling ships are loaded. Lots of good details. I think the one in the video is much bigger than the one in this thread.

Good, here's some.
It is looking like the market is beginning to discount Putin going down, which seems inevitable. The key will be which sectors stand to gain the most from a Putin loss.
Im selling part of my Conoco position which is the biggest in my portfolio. Whats Xpel, how you guys see its future?? After Im done shrinking the COP position Im going to have almost $500k to invest in something else, been nibbling on some electric cars like rivian and nio, also want to add more to my Porsche position because I think theyll succeed a lot in the electric car business.
I never heard of Matt Farah so I looked him up.
Man, he is the oldest looking 40 year old I've ever seen. I looked better, much better than that at 60.
