Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

I need a definitive answer on whether I can connect my iPod (hardwired - not iTrip) to my Cayman S (06) with PCM. I've searched the threads here but I am not sure of the answer. I know it is a MOST bus, but but cannot find anything to fit. Dension does not seem to make a kit yet and I am confused on other brands. It needs to be a manufacturer who supplies to the UK. I miss driving to my iPod music..... Thanks in anticipation

POST 2Original post

According to this link (updated 11/27), the dension ICE will hook into the PCM and MOST system for complete Ipod integration. Of course this has been the subject of repeated delays.... http://www.bumperplugs.com/DensionGroupBuy2.html Hope it is true!

POST 3Original post

I am having XM radio installed once the car arrives in 10 days, the installer at local stereo shop asked me if I wanted Ipod capabilities interfaced with the XM unit? He said the XM radio would sound better and he would hide the unit in the glove box. My comment was how much, $600 more plus $150 for the Ipod, it's not that I don't trust their work, my dealership uses them for all their installs and while I was there, they were installing XM and a radar detector in the front bumper on a new 911. I think now he trying to jack up the cost, we have a Porsche owner! Has anyone else ever heard of this set up?

POST 4Original post

simple answer is navtv.com it works with most and it shows the ipod menu on your nav screen. if you need a guy in NY to do the work I can direct you to someone.

POST 5Original post

It lists the Cayenne but not the Cayman. Do you know it works?

POST 6Original post

Fyi navtv is the producer of the denison product...its the same unit and currently still has a few bugs...ask lots of questions before you install it so you are happy...i have it and pcm and it works, but the scrolling thru names/playlists etc is horrible...i am awaiting their updated units however no ETA yet. ps: denison says one reason they didn't release it yet was that there were too many bugs with it yet navtv was selling it directly to dealers anyhow.

POST 7Original post

same company denison and dice are related...forget which is which, but navtv is building the units for denison.

POST 8Original post

Are they related? Last I heard, it was just that Dension had stopped selling their own product and had started selling DICE products. There are certainly two different web sites: http://www.densionusa.com/ http://www.diceelectronics.com/ I've had both Dension and DICE products in my M3. Dension has horrible customer service ... like they ignore you for weeks ... literally. I haven't had to use DICE customer support since their product works. I also looked at their information at one time and was unable to establish a true link.

POST 9Original post

Interesting, the Dension site says now distributing dice. My reference above has pictures of the product in action. All the pieces from Dension are labelled "dice". I received an email from Erik at bumper plugs saying that it should be finalized soon with initial orders going out in early January. Please refer to the site, it is fairly specific.

POST 10Original post

Right, but DICE != Dension. DICE is based in Utah, Dension in CA. Dension sells DICE stuff. Unless, of course, that's not what you meant and you actually know they're the same.

POST 11Original post

I know nothing of their legal relationship. Only the obvious connection.

POST 12Original post

In Europe even the lowest priced Citroen the C1 has an iPod connection as standard. You can buy eigtht of these cars for the pricre of one Cayman S. Very poor that Porsche do not provide this connection in the standard car.

POST 13Original post

I am on Bumperplug's group buy list for whenever the final DICE product comes out. What's not clear is whether this is only for cars with PCM or not. Back to square one if it only works on PCM. I have had Icelinks in an Audi and in my M3 and MINI. The Audi had all functionality through the headunit but did not display ID3 tags or menus. The BMW cars had that too which is really nice. Even without it though, direct dock connection is always going to sound better than headphone output or FM transmitter.

POST 14Original post

If you're going to criticize Porsche on this issue, you might as well criticize all the other auto manufacturers that don't offer iPod integration as standard or an option in their cars. There are more of these companies that don't offer it than those who do.

POST 15Original post

Denison, dice and navtv correct...denison is distributing the dice products...as for the navtv ipod kit, it is also being sold by denison with the navtv logo on it (so i am told)...anyhow, the denison product is the navtv solution...if/when the bugs get worked out denison will sell it; until then navtv has been providing them to dealers...thats how i got mine! as i stated, it still has bugs though.

POST 16Original post

dave90601, sorry to nitpick, but it's DENSION, not DENISON! D-E-N-S-I-O-N. Sorry, stuff like that just bugs me to death.

POST 17Original post

Yeah, but in the end, they're a really shitty company, so I don't mind so much.

POST 18Original post

:argue: here I was, getting all ready to call you (Interpol) an idiot, when I thought I ought to be totally certain.... blow me if I've been incorrectly calling Dension - Denision my whole life!!!! Thanks for the correction. Rich

POST 19Original post

No problem Rich Whenever somebody says "Dennison" or "Denison" I always end up thinking about the canned chili company. I guess that's why it bugs me so much. Although at the rate Dension is going with their MOST product, it might as well be canned chili.

POST 20Original post

I've talked to Eric from bumperplugs about this a few months ago. He said that a system would be coming out first for pcm cars and then for non-pcm cars a few weeks behind. Since Dension time is a multiple of real time, I give them an extra six months before it arrives. I don't know how the Dension solution can possibly be NavTv. I've heard that again and again and it makes no sense, given they plan on releasing a non-pcm version. I still say the NavTv solution is a hack. All it does is fool the PCM system into thinking it is a tv input. The PCM system displays the video output from the NavTv device. When you click one of the buttons, it changes the video stream that is sent to the PCM system. That is why you will see complaints about refresh rate and the like. It isn't a digital system, it is just an analog hack to make it appear like it is. If that is the only solution that comes out from Dension, I'll pass. mods4cars is working on two solutions, one which will give a direct aux input and another which will give ipod control. I'll hold out for his solution before I go with anything from NavTv.

POST 21Original post

I'm still waiting on info from the dealer, but they told me they could work with a local audio shop to get an iPod integrated into my Cayman if it had PCM. This was a significant selling point for the PCM for me actually... I still haven't heard any details, but I suspect it is the "TV out" hack that was mentioned. I've got a Feb build so I expect to take possession in April. Any idea what the options may be around then? I'd like to take care of this at that time since I am planning on rolling the cost into my lease

POST 22Original post

I use the harman kardon Ipod kit and its pretty simple to hardwire to your car. http://www.harmankardon.com/drive-1/?Language=ENG&Region=USA&Country=US&cat=MME theres the link to the product

POST 23Original post

How are you hardwiring this in? To the CD changer hookup in the front trunk?

POST 24Original post

No the drive+play hardwires through a wired FM modulator that is an extra accessory, like $20. It has a wireless transmitter built in. It does support actual rca connections but only if your stereo has the outputs, which the Cayman doesn't. The advantages you get from the kit are being able to charge your ipod while you play it, have a screen and joystick in a convenient location, and no need for an extra switch to flip the FM modulator on and off. You can pick up the drive+play very inexpensively now on ebay; but you could also pay $20-$30 for just the wired FM modulator and get the same audio quality.
