Suggestion

You can also get a similar/same bolt and use a washer but i wasnt sure of the class of bolt (5 or 8 likely).

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

6 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Car is a 2003 Targa Tiptronic. Thanks to shearing a bolt during my water pump job, I need to order parts 12, 13, and 14 in the diagram below. Problem is, I can't figure out part #14 (the bolt). The first #14 says it's been superceded by part 90037815001, an 8x55 bolt. But then there are two other part numbers, one is also a 8x55, while the other is an 8x60. How do I determine which I need?

POST 2Original post

Same happened to me. At the parts counter at the dealer i just tried to order both. One wouldnt let them order. Fair warning, the bolt looks a bit different than the old one but works fine. List was $5 or so. You can also get a similar/same bolt and use a washer but i wasnt sure of the class of bolt (5 or 8 likely). I think i used an 8 while waiting for the proper factory bolt. Glad you got it out.

POST 3Original post

#1 - you can use any bolt of the proper length, size, thread pitch & grade #2 - when you measure length it should be from the bottom of the head to the end of the threads (in the photo youre measuring from the top of the head). * the length of these bolts are critical - if you use one thats to long for the spot its going in you can penetrate a water jacket or oil galley there are several different lengths on the water pump so he careful they stay in their proper positions. #3 - Torque to proper spec

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for the help all, I ordered the 8x60mm bolt and a new Sebro pulley.

Appreciate the info, particularly for how to measure the bolt. I've gone my whole life apparently not knowing that. I found whomever did the water pump replacement previously only used one long bolt, not two. I removed six shorter bolts, and one long one. Replaced with new hardware and torqued them all to spec. The idler pulley bolt wasn't torqued at all. I was able to remove it with my hand, which was alarming. When I torqued it back down it sheared almost immediately. Not sure if it was already weakened or what, but regardless, new bolt and pulley on the way.
