Hi Everyone, glad the OP's issue was able to be resolved...just wanted to mention if you do find yourself with a dead battery and locked out of access to get to the battery itself we have a couple of great solutions to help avoid the hassle of getting a tow.

Suggestion

If looking for an alternative option for an existing battery like using a jump starter we also have a clampless harness that you can use with our Microstart which can be run to the battery terminal connection and routed to an accessible external point from the hood for easy access(similar example shown in the image below.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hello Pcar enthusiasts, Got in my car after work today, turned the key, and EVERYTHING went dead - not even a dome light working. Battery is 6 mos old, car was on a battery tender for much of the winter, drove fine, voltage near the 14 mark when running. What gives? 01 996 C2. Fun times - laptop, wallet and all in the frunk of course (why no mechanical release is beyond me, who carries a booster pack on their back seat?!). Car is in a parking garage, so towing should be fun, assuming it will require a tow. Waiting for wifey to show up with booster pack so that I can free my stuff at least. 32k miles on her, 3k by me, 1st time stranded and none too happy about it! THANKS for advice!

POST 2Original post

I've had this happen with loose/corroded/dirty battery terminals. When trying to start the car I get a click and then everything goes dark. After cleaning and tightening the terminals there's no issue.

POST 3Original post

There is a mechanical release cable. Probably 500 threads i how to get to the cable. May be a bad cable connection or even the ignition switch. If the bat is dead it may have a bad cell.

POST 5Original post

I don't remember if the 2001 is the same, but on a 2000 the engine lid will release without a battery. If that's the case with your car you can connect a battery to the jump points to open the frunk. If not, you'll have to try to fish the emergency release cable under the driver side tail light or under the front bumper.

hah, I almost shot some coffee I was drinking out my nose!!!!! hahahahaaaahaa

POST 7Original post

You can jump start it just like any other car, there is just one extra step. I hope you didn't already pay for a tow!

POST 8Original post

I can't help with the mechanical release search but I do want to say that every household should have one of these things. It has been a savior for me - not for my 2000 996 but a Honda Accord that has an electric issue that drains the battery if it gets caught in the rain. My road service provider (AAA) will no longer come to do a jump so I just use this. Lithium Jump Starter Box Amazon Amazon

I'd say it's the ignition switch. These are well known to fail over time... not just miles, but time in service. Swapping it out is a pretty straight forward DiY project. It plugs into the back of the ignition assembly.

This was the first purchase I made for my 996 after all that I read in the forums... I sold my car and bought another 996 and ! promptly placed in the back seat!

Hi Everyone, glad the OP's issue was able to be resolved...just wanted to mention if you do find yourself with a dead battery and locked out of access to get to the battery itself we have a couple of great solutions to help avoid the hassle of getting a tow. We have our lithium Automoitve battery models which have built in wireless jump starting. If the battery is being drained the battery will shut itself off to prevent being over discharged. At that same point, there is a dedicated amount of capacity remaining which will be able start the car upon engaging the ReStart feature via the included wireless remote. https://antigravitybatteries.com/pro...tive/ag-h6-rs/ If looking for an alternative option for an existing battery like using a jump starter we also have a clampless harness that you can use with our Microstart which can be run to the battery terminal connection and routed to an accessible external point from the hood for easy access(similar example shown in the image below. https://antigravitybatteries.com/pro...-starts/xp-10/ https://antigravitybatteries.com/pro...s-msa10b-long/ Hopefully that helps give you some ideas on options and as always please feel free to reach out to us with any questions at all.
