POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I’ve owned a number of Porsches over the years and currently have a 991.2 GT3 (23,000 miles) and a 718 Spyder RS (still being run in). They are each weekend cars (no commuting, daily driving, motorways or track), as I live in the north of Scotland and have plenty of nice and empty roads to use. The GT3 currently serves as my winter weekend car (it’s on winter tyres and is fine even on a few inches of snow). I am pondering a GR Yaris to add to the garage and to offer a different car for the winter, but I’m afraid coming from the GT3 (and cars with engines behind me), I maybe won’t be as enthusiastic as everyone else is about it and end up always picking up the GT3 key. On the other hand, Harry M seems to like his GRY and he’s usually on the money. Curious therefore if anyone has/did have a GR Yaris in their garage alongside a sporty Porsche and has any thoughts to share ? A 30 minute test drive around some town isn’t going to educate me, so looking for other Porsche and GRY owners who can. I’ve looked on the GRY forums here and elsewhere, but not had any luck finding others who have done this. Cheers.

POST 2Original post

I realise it doesn’t answer your question, but: Having had a selection of Porsche GT and standard products over the years, I would like to suggest you look at the FL5 Civic Type R. I’m currently running one as my daily, and have to admit that the reviews are pretty much bang on. It really is the FWD “GT3” of the hot hatch world. Having driven a GRY, though they are incredibly good fun, the Type R just has that something extra about it. That bit more fizz and excitement. And that is having driven them both on roads I’m sure you’re familiar with in the north west Highlands. Jack

Mine is lightly modified with camber upgrades, roll bars etc. Fanstatic tech for the money with switchable driive ratios. Light weight, keeps up with pork on the twisties and fun daily! Open the exhaust up with light mods and you have a rally car for the road.

POST 4Original post

Have toyed with one as a winter car but for longer drives shirt gearing would annoy me plus hassle of short service intervals. If my winter driving was shorter cross country blasts I’d have one in a heartbeat

POST 5Original post

Have a Yaris alongside my P cars from new. Different car of course but a great car in its own right, brilliant fun and very usable and I’ve had some fantastic road trips, took it down to Morocco last year and heading off ice driving in Austria tomorrow. I’ve swapped the dampers, seats and had an engine map courtesy of litchfield, upgraded the audio and sound insulation to make it more usable on long trips.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks all - sounds like I need to get my hands on one. For the type of roads I drive on, I thought it would be good, but was afraid 200BHP less and front engined wouldn’t compare and it wouldn’t be used. I prefer the idea/looks of the GRY versus the CTR, even through I know from ECOTYs and the like, that it’s a smashing drive too.

POST 7Original post

I'm running a GR Yaris alongside a Cayman GTS 4.0. Had the Yaris since June 2021 and the Cayman since November 2020. Really like them both. The Yaris is a real terrier of a car - great fun when you're going quickly but I think it's quite nice to drive at normal speeds too. Both cars are completely standard and get used in rotation alongside an E90 M3. If I had to keep only one car, it really would be quite a tough choice between the Cayman and the Yaris when you consider the extra practicality and all-weather capability of the Yaris. But the Cayman would shade it. The M3, lovely though it is, would be the first to go!

POST 9Original post

We have similar choices in cars. I had a GR Yaris from new in 21 alongside a 997.2 GT3 and 987.2 Boxster Spyder. I did like my GRY and had it for 2 years and about 20,000 miles but found the ride, noise and frequent servicing took the shine off it, only because the balance of fun driving compared to mundane everyday duties with few opportunities to enjoy it's abilities was the wrong way around for me It was a fab car to drive fast and very predictable in the wet. I think where you are the balance of fun to mundane is far greater in your favour so I would say go for it. Perfect on these types of roads.

But I’d at least try and get a shot in one before you completely rule it out. The new ones do look fantastic in the flesh too. Seating position is perfect. Gear change. Drivetrain. And much more practical if needed. Plus it doesn’t need any mods…

I have owned a GRY from new in Feb 2021 (20k miles) and it’s shared a garage with a GT3 and 964 RS amongst others and never comes up short. Totally standard car (besides some geo tweaks) and still gives me enough enjoyment to maintain its place in the fleet. Even managed to survive an RMA day at Spa.

POST 15Original post

Not a GRY, but we have a Clubsport S Golf for the same sort of cheaper thrills.

POST 16Original post

Probably get shot down here but have you considered a new model S3 . I was in a similar dilemma what to buy and settled on an S3 .It sits on my drive between a 911 and a Polo gti. It’s the ideal daily , the 911 a fast fair weather car , Polo great for city work and Audi for all else. It’s fast enough ,seats 4 , 4wd with good tech , combining full leather interior comfort and quietness for most journeys . It gets poor reviews from some but after a couple of thousand miles driving I’m baffled why as it’s a great all rounder. Anyway good luck with the choice you make.

POST 17Original post

Oh I'm jealous of that garage above. My garage is on a block, very damp and dark with no power. But I'm still glad that I have a garage for storage and parking my Triumph Bonnie. My Alpine has to sit outside. Sorry off topic but I swoon every time I see a garage that you can actually hang pictures in and keep cars on trickle charge. I'd buy a double garage with just a loft above for me if I could find one

When I sold my last Macan I still needed something practical (dog wagon) and looked at the Yaris among others but it was a bit too small. In the end I managed to get one of the last new MINI Clubman JCW's. 300+BHP, 4 wheel drive and 5 (6?) doors, it's probably not as sharp as the Yaris but is still bonkers to drive and a lot of fun.

The bespoke Type R flared arches, bumpers, rear door are well done. FK8 was a mess in comparison with its tacked on plastic bits.

Tbf the Yaris doesn’t really have competition as it is a rally car. Other alternatives are 4wd or fwd sports cars.

Guess there are quite a few options for practical daily duties, and a bit of fun, alongside a sporting Porsche. And, no doubt Porsche would hope we got a Macan/Cayman/Panamera/Taycan. But, some of the ‘hot hatches’ can offer everything one needs for a lot less money. Granted, the Honda gets great road test reviews, but it really is a messy looking car. That must have hurt its sales success. Over the years, several of the popular journals have asked the question about the perfect 2-car garage, and the 911 and Golf GTi are often cited as a popular choices.

Golf boring It's not as exciting, I'd agree. But the GR is quite a raw car NVH wise compared to a Golf, and the interior whilst totally rattle free in mine, is not up to the quality of the German brand. However, if your main objective is being fun to drive, IMO the GR knocks the rest into a cocked hat. Hooligan of a car! I've got the Nitron dampers BTW. Edited by 993rsr on Sunday 26th January 15:53

I'm running a GR Yaris alongside a GT3 Touring. The Yaris is my runaround and it delivers, owned since new 2021, best way to describe it is exciting. The way it drives by far makes up for its slightly awkward looks and interior. Hard to describe just how good it is.

POST 33Original post

had one and a 991c4s, now gt4. gr was good fun, but it doesn't have the flat ride of a German sports car - the rally lean is an acquired thing. I've thought about going back to one, but I'd def fit the nitrons if I did

They were parked up for less than five minutes and there's plenty of parking in that place on the housing estate.

I have had a Yaris from new for coming up 3 years. I bought it as I missed out on the impreza and evos when younger. Can’t see me ever selling it. I love about everything about it. If you need more space the civic would be way more practical though as they are pretty large. I have had an issue where a spark plug failed at under 4k miles causing me to require recovering. Toyota refused the warranty on it as they said it’s a wear and tear item which I was pretty disappointed about. Especially as the service interval is 60k miles. I use mine alongside a 997.2 GT3 when the weather isn’t great.

POST 37Original post

I've had my GR CP since Sept 21, in that time I've run it alongside a GT3 Touring and a GT3RS, they are both now gone but the Yaris remains as a runaround alongside a Cayenne GT Turbo. I honestly can't see me selling the Yaris anytime soon, such a great little car and a blast to drive, it has it's rough edges but................

As seen by comments above, those who’ve owned the Yaris, love them Modern day Impreza to me..

POST 39Original post

I run a GR Yaris, and GT4RS.. Just sold my 997.2 GT3. The GR Yaris rates in the top three cars I’ve ever owned, and I’ve had over 10 Porsches. The only modification I’ve done to my Yaris, is seat lowering and adding camber to the car, plus toe in at the rear.. Lots of people have modified the suspension with coil overs, but I left mine on stock suspension as I like the ride height (More Rally like) It also makes for a fun drive as you get the most from it with trail braking to balance the pitching from the stock suspension into bends. It’s also a wonderful car to heel and toe. The Pilot 4s tyres are great on them in this crappy weather and for fast road in the summer. The only additional modification I am going to look at is replacing the brake hoses, disks, and some additional cooling to the front brakes.. They did start to fade a bit on some aggressive Alpine driving last October. It easily kept pace with the GT4’s and 4RS on the alps tour, only lost out a bit on the uphills sections out of the hairpins if it fell off the turbo. Edited by cdixon on Tuesday 28th January 13:58

OP, I have a GRY alongside a 996 C4S, a 'Classic' Impreza and an i3 that I daily. The GR is a bonkers car; I love it. I did use it as a daily but knew I'd end up running out of talent (I'm no driving God) or find myself collecting Points hence I got the i3. I bought the GR less than a year after getting the C4S. I'd always wanted a Porsche but had never been in a position to get one. It (the C4S) will go before the Yaris. I've had the Classic since 2001; in my mind the GR is the spiritual successor to the Impreza. Get an GRY; you won't regret it.

Glad OP you are now looking for a GRY. Fantastic cars, traded mine in recently for the 911 of my dreams, Circuit pack, standard. IMO they do NOT need to be modded if used as a “fun” runaround. Economical, will potter around when called for, fairly comfy etc etc, and,,,,,,,,, when you want to go for a bit of a hoon on your favourite twisty bumpy slimy B road, Nothing, will keep up with one, astonishing grip for a car on road tyres. Learn how to turn off all the driver aid b ks, put in sport mode and smile If you hold the traction/slip control button down for at least 10 seconds, it turns EVERYTHING off, then ignore all the yellow symbols on the dash

POST 53Original post

Agreed for road use they don’t need fettling. For occasional track use, camber bolts, anti lift and thicker rear anti roll bar really help, with a decent geo These mods don’t cost much and the car is much improved.

POST 54Original post

I run a GR and an ND in southern Europe and a 992 Turbo S and 991.2 GT3 in the UK. Sometimes the Turbo spends the summer with her little sisters. The GR is a lighter, slower, softer Turbo. In fact, that pretty much sums up the ND compared to the GT3

Not sure what to compare it to as it feels unique. For me a better alignment, thicker rear roll bar, camber bolts, anti lift were more important to improve lane driving.

My old 987.1 Cayman S on 18"s with PASM rode very sweetly on B-roads. The Yaris on its standard suspension is similar.

I was hopefully for a plush setup as it has rally credentials. Not very firm, the ride is composed enough that you can run pretty much any speed over an undulating country road, but it retains sufficient control to ensure you can sustain a fast pace. It's got very good primary and secondary ride. If you want something cosseting and pillowy a GR is probably not the car, the NVH is quite noticeable but again depends on your expectations and tolererance, I did 10 hrs and 630 miles back to the UK from Stuttgart last week in one hit no problem. The amount of travel in the suspension makes it an extremely good sports car for uk roads. Std set up on mine was excellent and improved a little on the conti SC 7 at 235 which gave a tiny bit more sidewall. Mines gone now but I used as a daily for for two and a half years and 25k miles.

Had a GR circuit pack, lovely car if you’re on it and really pushing down a well sighted b road. Personally I hated the harsh ride when doing mundane duties and definitely didn’t want to use it on a motorway drive as found it tiring. So it hardly ended up getting used when I went out. Also found with 4wd being so good, it lost a bit of drama. It was more point and shoot, which was fun for a while but then became a bit bland unless you started doing silly speeds. 6 month service intervals were annoying. Give it a go as they are not expensive and I’m a big softy when it comes to suspension set up - my ideal car is something I can drive all the time and which has a Jykell and Hyde character.

POST 75Original post

I moved from a 991.1 GTS to a GRY. The GRY is very easy to live with and great fun. It doesn't need to be on the limit to appreciate the steering quality and elegance ti the suspension set up. it isn't an obvious replacement to any 911, but I am limited by parking spaces, so one in one out. it is fair to say a few non-petrolhead friends thought I must have received a bump on the head! I would recommend the GRY to anyone but read my comments about the deal network first. Any owner will testify you will see the dealership 4x more frequently compared to the Porsche.... assuming no issues arise between services. Both fantastic, both use around the same amount of S/Unleaded fuel. The GRY surprised as to the breadth of its capabilities, even after reading all the reports. On long drives it was super (London to Perthshire, Scotland) absolutely fine. Radar Cruise is excellent. motorway speeds are lifted easily from the instantly available torque. Obviously not such a nice place to be inside, but not awful either. Very easy to park and leave. Never had any issues with people reacting to the car, although I didn't experience any with the 991 either, but I was more careful where I left the Porsche parked and generally didn't let customers see it. I was interested to see how such a light car would cope with the UK weather, and to be fair when washed it looked just as good after almost 4 years as it did the day I collected it. Now the warning. If anyone is making use of the car for higher mileage, the servicing will irritate with dealer visits every 6,000 miles or 6 months. Now I like many on here have complained about the OPC dealer network...... they are superb in comparison to the Toyota dealers! The dealer network for Toyota is why I will never have another Toyota. They are truly appalling. Car ragged during its service (trackers can be very useful!), car returned with tyres at 4 different levels, and the rears both higher than the fronts!! I had no confidence they could use the correct oil or in fact any confidence in the after sales. This spanned no less than 4 local dealers who were part of 2 large groups. Eventually, some 35 miles away I found an independent and they were fine. As an additional car it would be a great addition, subject to having a good local dealer. As an everyday car its also excellent.

POST 78Original post

I do quite fancy one as a more usable alternative to my cliosport, but don’t fancy 6 monthly visits to the dealer. If I was retired then fine, but otherwise then too much of a PITA.

POST 79Original post

Serviced once a year at my local dealer and the warranty extended each year, no suggestion of 6 monthly checks to facilitate this.

POST 80Original post

IMac said: MannyLon said: Service isn’t every six months. I understand your point, and must adit to being tested to skip it. However for the reasons below, at the time I sold it, I was glad that I maintained the full six monthly visits. With the safety checks it require a visit to the dealership every six months. Toyota dealers do stamp the service book and having just sold mine, it was a requirement of a FSH. It was also confirmed by two dealers that the six monthly checks were required for the 10 year warranty. Is it a service.... probably not what we might expect a service to be. However, it appears to fit within the definition for the reasons above. Interesting ref the 6 month check impacting the warranty. Had mine for just over 3 years and needed some warranty work prior to selling. The lack of a 6 month check didn’t stop them honouring the warranty.

POST 81Original post

The safety check no longer appears as an option on the Toyota online booking system.

POST 82Original post

Its certainly inconsistent communication from Toyota. The number of annual renewals for the 10 year warranty will be limited as the only the earliest registered vehicles are starting their 5th year. The initial manufacturer warranty from new is different, and is not annually renewed. Clearly warranty claims have been paid outside of the initial 3 year warranty and in the absence of the 6 Month check. It will be interesting if anyone has had a warranty claim rejected due to not having the 6 month check. It will also be interesting to understand what the dealers view as FSH, now and in the future.

The Yaris is quick and capable daily car, the GT3 a very expensive weekend toy. With the GT3 being 6 times more expensive, I’d expect it to be a lot better. Buckets don’t make any sense for a daily car. Same as the 18 way in the GT3, good for more regular trips.

POST 92Original post

Late to the party here but own a GRY circuit pack alongside a trio of water cooled GT Pork. Have owned lots of hot hatches over the years so the GRY is a good reference point. Great little weapon, especially in winter conditions with the 4wd and the diff set up. It's not perfect from a refinement and ergonomics perspective but if you prioritise the driving experience over everything else, it is right up there and should be on your list. It has genuine character and its cross country pace is undeniable. Very well screwed together, and reveals the depth of its capabilities the harder you drive it, so for me it's a car that always rewards and keeps you interested. I realise the drivetrain is fundamentally different but from an experiential perspective it reminds me of the Clio 182 I used to have twenty (can't believe I just wrote that) years ago from the perspective of how hard you can attack a give-or-take road without it ever feeling scrappy or getting over its skis.

POST 93 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks again everyone for the different perspectives (OP here). I don’t expect the GRY to match the other cars in my garage in the summer or be used much then - that’s when my GT cars and Huracan Evo RWD get out to play. I have my GT cars on winter tyres from Nov-March and will still use them then, when it’s dry and sunny. But for those days when the roads are covered in snow/slush/salt and no good would come from taking a GT car out, I wanted something to turn to that will still give me the ‘pleasure of driving’ as I think EVO magazine put it. The GRY felt like a car that would do that. Time will tell.

This is a source reference. Confirm exact model applicability in the original material.
