I seem to remember something in the manual about setting the seat as far back as possible so that you can just fully depress the accelerator - then maybe if you moved the steering wheel towards you a bit it might give you the clearance you need.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi,
New to the forum, hopefully one of you guys can answer a question that google cant.
I'm looking to buy a 996, a 2002 or 2003. One thing I wondered is whether it is possible to get a decent after market steering wheel which is either smaller in circumference or isnt round (has some of the bottom cut out).
I'm 6 ft 4 and always have a problem getting my right foot on the break without my thigh catching the steering wheel, and I end up bending my ankle to reach the break. I've drove a couple of my mates 996's and my brothers 997 anf it've very frustrating as the rest of the cabin is spacious enough in terms of head room and legroom, but unless I can sort this out I wont buy one as it just doesn't fit.
thanks in advance.
I've had a look on demon-tweeks, there are loads of choices, I dont want anything too bling / halfords and would like to just get something round with smaller diameter, does anyone know what the standard diameter is for the default steering wheel ?
cheers
Thanks seagull, an airbag would be nice, I dont know exactly the space I need, I suppose ideally it going up a couple of inches would be nice, but it may look a bit daft and maybe there isnt a one that small.
All I know is feels just plain wrong and very uncomfortable with the standard one, I borrowed my brothers 997 when he was on holiday and left it on the drive after a few days. He's 6 ft 1 and doesnt have a problem, based on this I reckon I wont have a problem if I can find a couple of inches.
yeah I did think about the seat, it's already cranked all the way down and thought the steering wheel would be the easier option, plus it might feel like sitting on the floor.
Would be curious to know what other tall 911 owners do to get round this. I suppose it I could drop the seat down another inch and get the steering wheel with airbag that seagull mentioned that would give another inch and a half which would do the trick.
thanks for all the input, at least there is a solution and it's not insurmountable, so I can go ahead and get the car.
cheers
I am 6'5", with a 996 cab....no issues (it is a tip...). 997 is also fine...may I suggest you go to a dealer and try out a few more, you may just need to play with the seats a bit more!

IMHO mods to the standard wheel etc.. are often a big compromise. I haven't experienced it on a Porsche but a 5 series I used to have had an aftermarket wheel and looked great but was horrible to live with.
If that doesn't work you should still buy the car and consider cosmetic surgery 3-4 inches out of each thigh should do it.
