Edit: I've made an info page for the 987.2 parts here, and yes I'm still making them!
987.2 Intake Caps & Engine Centerpiece
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Some of you might recognize me in the 981 areas, where I've designed a clear engine cover and several engine accessories for the 981/982 Cayman. I was thinking about adapting my 981 engine centerpiece design so that it would work for the 987.2 engine.
If this sounds interesting for any 987.2 Cayman owners with clear engine covers, please chime in.
If I get enough interest and help (via photos and measurements), I can design a new engine centerpiece compatible with the HIP Design cover. Keep in mind that an engine centerpiece will likely run in the ballpark of $400, not including the red intake caps or optional Porsche crest. By the way, the red intake caps are already compatible with 987.2 models.
For reference, here is my 981 centerpiece development thread:
981 Engine Centerpiece
And here is how the final product for the 981 looks. I imagine the 987.2 version will look similar:
Do you have this available for the
987.2
?
This doesn't exist for
987.2
yet, and it'll probably take a couple months to design and make. What model of
987.2 Cayman
do you have (base or S)? Can you share any photos of your engine bay and possibly take some measurements?
Here is how the
987.2
engine centerpiece is looking so far. At first glance it looks like the one I designed for the
981
, but most of the small details are different. I've designed this so that it's not tied to the red intake caps I make, as there is at least one person who probably won't be using my intake caps with his installation.
The
next
step is to make a physical mockup of this design, and see how it fits in the engine bay. There isn't much vertical space between the shifter cable(s) and the HIP Design 987 clear engine cover, so I have a very narrow envelope to work inside before the centerpiece interferes with something.
Looks really good!
I've sent this link to a friend who has a clear cover on. He'll be interested if pricing is fair.
Thanks, the pricing will be as fair as I can make it. I'm not looking to make much more than beer money, but anodized aluminium and carbon fiber is expensive.
That really looks great. This is the first I’m seeing of the centerpiece. I’ve known about the clear engine cover, but decided against it because I didn’t think the engine compartment of my
987.2
was attractive enough to show. And I figured I could make some improvements via cleaning and painting, but that was down on my wish list.
But this looks really good so perhaps it could move higher on the wishlist. Is there a way I can find pricing for the whole package? Cover, centerpiece and red covers?
OneTimeCS Be sure to look into the use of the
Porsche
badge before you commit to funding this project.
Porsche
is very sticky about this sort of thing.
It's attached with glue. Maybe a web link on where to source the badge and the owner could install. Sort of like forged wheels, the center hubcap with a
Porsche
shield glued on. I agree the product looks great.
When I first started working on my
981
's engine, I eventually realised that painting the intake caps would be very difficult and time consuming. The hardest part would be to paint the
PORSCHE
logo cleanly, as it's recessed into the plastic. In the end I found it to be easier and more productive to make new caps that mount directly on top of the old ones:
A positive aspect of going this route is that it also makes it easier for others to get painted intake caps in their cars with minimal effort or skill.
After making the intake caps, I also wanted something to cover up the central area especially since the shifter cable(s) are so untidy. That's when I designed the engine centerpiece for my 981:
I had hoped that since the 981 and 987.2 share similar engines, that my intake caps and centerpiece would drop right in. Unfortunately what I didn't know is that the HIP Design clear cover sits around 1 inch lower than my 981 clear cover. While the intake caps fit just fine, the 981 centerpiece is too tall. That's why I'm designing a new, lower profile one for the 987.2. I'm also designing one for the 718 4.0, but that's another story.
Regarding sourcing a clear cover for your 987.2, I think HIP Design is the only one currently available for your car. I'm not associated with them, but am designing my centerpiece to be compatible.
As for pricing of my parts, I can say immediately that they're not cheap. Low-volume production that involves a lot of labour and expensive materials is costly. I don't post prices in the forum because it's probably against the rules, and also because my costs change with every batch made. I have to adjust my prices every now and then to make sure that I stay just above my costs. If you'd like pricing for my 981 parts (in order to get a feel for what the 987.2 parts will be like), please email me at
[email removed]
and I'll send you info.
Thank you for the tip, I had actually considered this when designing the engine centerpiece for the 981. For this reason, I don't include a Porsche crest with my centerpiece. Instead, I direct people to Suncoast Parts where they can buy a genuine Porsche crest directly from an authorized dealer. Not everyone wants a crest on their centerpiece, so it makes for a more customizable installation as well:
The crest is the same one on the front hood of the 981 (I don't know if it's the same for the 987), and is held in place using a couple nuts. I include a 3D printed backing plate to hold the crest in proper alignment with the centerpiece. Here is a view of the underside showing the nuts:
If that crest is a
Porsche
front hood OEM product, its up to the owner to order it from
Suncoast Parts
. Fantastic.
I also asked a good trademark attorney for advice on the best way to approach this, and avoiding including the crest in my kit was the safest thing to do. In fact I have no involvement with the crest other than to tell people where they can buy a genuine
Porsche
part directly.
Was about to suggest this as well!
I've finished making the first physical mockup of the
987.2
, and test-fitted it in my
981
:
The centerpiece sits a little crooked, so that will be the first thing I fix. It presses down a bit on my shifter cable, but I have to make this sit low because I don't have a precise measurement of where the 987.2 clear cover is. Once I fix the crookedness, I'll eventually get this test-fitted in a 987.2 and will try to get a better sense of how close it is to hitting the clear cover.
After a small adjustment of the 3D printed base that holds the centerpiece mockup in place, it now fits inside the
987.2
with HIP Design clear engine cover. Here is how it looks. Keep in mind that this mockup was hand-cut. It's not meant to look good, but show if it interferes with anything.
You can see that the red intake caps look a little strange with the staggered positioning that is also not tilted in alignment with the centerpiece. I'm going to fix this with 3D printed wedges that install underneath the red caps:
Since everything now successfully fits in the 987.2, I've sent the parts out for manufacturing. In a few weeks I should get the real parts for the next round of test-fitments.
I have the first batch of parts made now, and they're looking nice:
A set has gone out for test-fitting. If all works well, I should have some photos of the installed centerpiece and intake caps soon.

You got my interest. Would this work with an IPD installed on a
987.2
R?
It will probably work since the engine centerpiece mounts onto the band clamps that hold the plenum in place, and those band clamps are still stock. It would be helpful to see photos of your IPD setup to check if there are any items on top of the plenum that could interfere.
Does the engine center piece
987.2
also fit a 987?
Sorry it won’t work with the 2.9.

Ok Thanks, What you have made so far really makes a difference in appearance if you have the see through cover.
Thanks for the reply. I will be ordering the see through cover soon.
If you haven't decided on which clear cover to get for your 987 yet, two options are HIP Design and Detailed Works 987. The later is the newest one in the field, and from what I've seen it looks really good. Detailed Works 987 is a bit harder to find online but here is their Instagram:

I got center piece and intake caps from
@OneTimeCS
a couple weeks ago for use with my HIP clear engine cover in my 987.2 Cayman. What a fantastic improvement. Below are some comments in no particular order:
1)
@OneTimeCS
is extremely responsive and timely in answering questions and providing information. Also very organized with very clear instructions (with pics) for installation.
2) I took my Cayman to the track this weekend and wanted to see how things would go. There were no problems at all with the setup. My coolant temp reached a little over 220 once and everything was fine. Received compliments from folks at the track.
3) I really like that I have very easy access to the engine now, and I can visually inspect everything. Especially important when tracking the car. With the stock setup, it takes about 15 min to "open the hood". With this one visual inspection is instantaneous and opening it up is undoing 2 screws. Really useful.
4) One thing to keep in mind with the intake caps is they get attached with double sided tape. I don't anticipate having to remove very often, but if you do, you have to undo the double sided tape and then replace it. The center piece on the other hand can easily be removed by undoing 6 screws. It's very easy and simple. The stock engine cover will not fit once the engine caps are in place.
I'm very happy with the new setup. Some folks mention that using a clear engine cover is louder. Perhaps that's true in terms of decibels, but the increase is not with the exhaust note. It's an increase in the mechanical sounds and intake. It makes me feel far more connected to the car. For the way most of us use these cars, it adds to the overall experience. You can still have normal conversations inside the car and listen to music. Highly recommended.
Looks good. I’m am very happy with mine also.
Thanks for the feedback, PorscheGreg and ChrisS819. I was a bit surprised to know that the stock cover doesn't fit with the red caps in place. The
981
must have quite a bit more vertical clearance than the
987.2
, as it's not an issue for the
981
. If you ever need to replace the double-sided tape, 1/4" wide 3M VHB foam tape and 1" wide Scotch-Mount Extreme double-sided mounting tape are what's used.
Please let us know when the
987.2
kit is available - will it include the clear engine cover and everything needed similar to your
981
kit? Is there a difference between
Cayman S
and base
Cayman
engine bays - I didn't think so.
Awesome product you have here.
Will you possibly make some "
987.2
" badges - that would be cool !
The 987.2 engine centerpiece and intake caps are available now, though it may take a few days to complete each assembly since I 3D print different parts according to if the engine is stock or has an IPD plenum. If you PM me your email address, I'll send you info about the options.
Regarding clear engine covers for the 987, I don't plan on making one since there are a couple good options already out there. My engine accessories are known to be compatible with the HIP Design and Detailed Works 987 clear covers.
I don't think there's a difference between the base and S 987.2 models as far as my parts are concerned, but it always helps if I can see a photo of the engine bay beforehand.
Right now I don't have any plans on making 987, 987.1, or 987.2 badges. I found that I've spread myself too thin with so many side projects, so I'm trying to simplify things. Also, I was originally planning on getting a 987.1 so I can play around with designing parts for it, but I got a 997.1 instead. I've already designed and 3D printed an accel pedal cover that makes it 100x easier to heel-and-toe in the 997, and this design will probably work in Cayman models as well.
I’d be interested in learning more about the pedal cover. Guessing it would fit my
987.2
if it fits a 997.
PS The intake caps and centerpiece are doing well still. They get lots of positive commentary at car events.
I'm glad to hear that the intake caps and centerpiece are holding up well. I like that there are so many possibilities for making the
Cayman
engine bay look more interesting. My 997 is the last
911
where you can actually see the engine, but there isn't much that can be done to make it look nicer.
Here's my little fleet of sports cars, including a
997.1
C2S,
981
CS, and supercharged FRS as the black sheep in the background.
Regarding the pedals, you may have noticed that it's difficult to heel-and-toe on the street because the brake pedal doesn't line up with the accel pedal unless you press on the brake hard. The pedals are apparently positioned for track use, where you'd press on the brake pedal hard (and therefore further down) before doing and heel-and-toe. For street use where you'll typically not press on the brake hard, the pedals don't line up and it's hard to reach the accel pedal.
I designed an accel pedal cover that's around 10 mm thick, that lines up the brake and accel pedals much better for light and moderate braking. I haven't had any issues with alignment during heavy braking either.
The pedal cover is angled so that it's a bit thicker on the right side. This makes the pedal surface sit parallel left-to-right with my foot, which makes it more comfortable. The picture below shows how the left side of the main pedal area isn't as thick as the right side:
The pedal cover is 215 mm tall and 45 mm wide (as measured at the top edge of the pedal). It's mounted using 3M double sided tape, which holds strongly yet doesn't require drilling into the pedal.
I was surprised at how much the cover helped with heel-and-toe. Instead of having to jab at the accel pedal and hope I reach it, I can easily place the right side of my foot/heel on the accel pedal and finely control how much throttle I apply regardless of braking force. I can even feather the accel pedal while braking now, which I've never experienced before.
I've made an info page for the 987.2 parts here, and yes I'm still making them!
987.2 Intake Caps & Engine Centerpiece
Hey readers,
I wish my introduction to the forum was a better one. I just wanted to share my experience ordering this centerpiece from Henry.
Looking through the pictures presented here, you can see that the engine caps are a great quality with a clean look.
Unfortunately, that wasn't what I received from Henry. What you see below in my picture is the caps installed with the clear engine cover as well.
Henry insisted that the "raindrop texture" you see was a protective coating. Anyone who has done clear coat or paint understands that these are extreme fisheyes/pinhole defects.
I could even see the debris, hair etc in the center of the holes which caused the defects. Still it was insisted it was the "protective coating"
The worst of this is he claimed it is VISIBLE IN THE PHOTOS. Please look at the old photos in this and the
981
thread to see this is untrue.
Since my purchase, he included a picture and a disclaimer about this in his presentation.
The texture presented there still is not shown in any other photos and is nothing like what I received.
I ended up spending a decent chunk of money in addition to what is already an expensive mod to a
Cayman
engine bay. (Sandpaper, Primer, Paint, Clearcoat, New Decals)
As a final note and disclaimer, I eventually opened a Paypal case for the materials used to fix the issues.
If you purchase this from Henry, understand that you may have to invest additional money and time into it for it to be presentable.
The one upside is that it is true Guard Red now.
Brandon
I'm sorry that you weren't satisfied with the parts, but I must respond to several
points
you make unfairly or unjustly:
Except the first two sets of red or yellow intake caps I made,
ALL
sets since then have had the raindrop texture. The first set was for my car, and the second set was for the first person who bought a clear engine cover from me in 2017. After I changed the process to make the caps more durable and nicer, I gifted a new set to the only person other than me who had the non-textured ones. There's literally no one with non-textured intake caps from me.
All the nice photos you see of owners' installations come from the owners themselves, and I have no say in what they share. If you don't see the raindrop texture in their photos, it's because the texture truly does not show up under most normal lighting conditions. If you shine an inspection light at it, yes it'll show. But that's what inspection lights are for.
The raindrop texture is done
on purpose
, because a glossy smooth painted surface will start to look bad within a few months from the harsh engine bay environment. This design decision was done for the sake of longevity over the course of many years.
The raindrop texture was first discussed on Planet-9 in June 2021. It was not a secret.
In the info doc I have shared publicly, the raindrop texture was first described in March 2022.
You received a set in December 2022, long after the raindrop texture was disclosed both on Planet-9 and in my info doc (not to mention other forums and websites).
When you said that you were unhappy about the texture,
I offered a return and refund but you declined. I asked for what else I could do to remedy your situation, and you did not reply
.
Over 4 months later, after you declined a return/refund, you made a claim with Paypal in attempt to get money back while you still keep the parts. How can this possibly be fair? If you were unhappy, you should have accepted a return and refund. It's not fair to keep the parts and demand a refund anyway.
Welcome to the forum Brandon. There are plenty of people here that can offer help and information that has value from their knowledge base and experience. I hope you continue to seek out topics about your
Porsche
in the plethora of diverse threads in the future.
I must say, you are the first person as far as I know, to have a problem with any of OneTimeCS's products or, more importantly, his service.
I believe you are incorrect in your assertion that the pics of the caps by OneTimeCS and also by members who have them installed don't show the raindrop finish. I posted pics on the
981
thread in 2021 specifically to point out the raindrop finish. I also believe you are incorrect in your assertion that the finish is poorly done. The finish on the caps i received were professionally done. I found that the finish also helped to hide the dust that inevitably accumulates in the engine bay.
I've purchased items from OneTimeCS on several occasions and can truly say he handles all business in a professional manner, is very honest and extremely fair. Why, if you were not happy with the product you received 4 months earlier, did you not send the parts back for either a new set or get the refund that was offered to you?
I feel you just wanted to change the color to what you claim is the "correct" Guards Red, needed to strip the raindrop finish to change the color and are now trying to get the money you spent to do that out of OneTimeCS.
Taking all of the above in consideration...I believe your paypal claim is in bad form and unwarranted...you should retract it.
Henry is a great guy to deal with. I contacted him about creating the intake covers and centerpiece for the
987.2
’s and helped him with the fitting of them. We sent pieces back and forth many times until we had things fitting just right. If you did not like the product then you should have sent it back for a refund which he was willing to give you. Don’t wait 4 months and cry like a little bitch and expect a full refund without returning the product.

Happy to respond to the little gang one time.
Show me pictures in the
981
thread that show a texture anything close to mine in the video and I'll show you ten more that don't have it.
If I am incorrect in my assertion that the finish is poorly done, please explain the debris and hair that was at the center of these "protective raindrops"
Please provide me any pictures of any clear coat on the internet with a "protective raindrop coating" that looks anything like the craters in my caps.
I uploaded a video with the link at the bottom better showing what I received.
Making the assumption that I used the raindrop texture as an excuse to squeeze Henry for money is not only horribly wrong, it's as bad as an assumption of me saying that Henry blatantly lied about the fisheye. He added the photo and disclaimer after my purchase to warn future buyers. That said, the new disclaimer photo doesn't represent my moon landing caps. The end result is that this is not a raindrop protective coating, it was not shown in the pictures, especially anything like mine. The photo and disclaimer was added after the fact. It was easily seen through a tinted rear window, through the engine cover not with a shallow light which Henry tried to say. I also included some pictures from the
981
thread with engine bay
leds
.... No craters.
After messaging Henry and hearing his "reasoning" for my caps looking like the moon, I decided to not debate him, let it go, suck it up or as Chris might say, not being a little bitch by paying the money to fix the issues etc. Over the months, after talking with more than several people, showing them what I received it just became more laughable. "Raindrop Texture" Finally, I listened and opened up the dispute. I'm not going to argue with Henry or Chris who is ignorant saying I asked for a full refund which isn't even close to reality. I will let a neutral third party decide, not the guy who held Henrys hand, who did not spray the "raindrops" and who resorts to calling people a little bitch in 2023 on forums lmfao. I still haven't installed them and included a timestamped picture from TODAY with materials I bought to finally fix them. I think I would've rather installed them months ago instead of still sanding them down to the printed plastic with the little time I can dedicate to it.
Once again, you can look at the photos in the thread in comparison to the video uploaded and decide for yourself as a buyer if you want "Raindrop" Engine caps.
