Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I don't think I've ever used either of those switches.
Leading evidence: 'Use either of those switches' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'blocking of the ac vents' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace hazard switch' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suspected cause
I think the bigger problem is the blocking of the AC vents.

It won't be fun - a least 1 center vent has to be removed, I suspect both make it easier to reach in to release it:

does anyone have any pictures of how to replace the hazard switch?

Or you could set the car to automatically lock - either when the engine is started or after the trigger speed is reached.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

does anyone have any pictures of how to replace the hazard switch? I am trying relocate it (due to large head unit) with an aftermarket standard 5 pin switch and I'm sure since this thread is from 2016, some attachments/videos are missing.
removing it to relocate where the double din will be. relocation needed as i have a floating (others on forum may find distasteful) large head unit covering hazard + door lock.
pinout
12v, gnd, led <- will figure these out w/ voltmeter
Normally close/normally open <- this will be trial and error
these 5 pinouts are not confirmed, but are my guess.
In the 13 years I've owned my
cayman
I don't think I've ever used either of those switches. In fact it took me a minute to figure out what they were for. I would just hide them. I think the bigger problem is the blocking of the AC vents.
oh.. i always used them for bad neighbourhoods and back to back traffic in california.
yes blocking ac vents is an issue; the only workaround is to just use the left and right vents.
Found it - assuming you just want to remove it. It won't be fun - a least 1 center vent has to be removed, I suspect both make it easier to reach in to release it:
The instructions are a bit cryptic - basically it sounds like you reach in, twist and pull on it and it will release from it's bracket. Then you fish it through the hole where the vent usually lives and can disconnect it.
Good luck - take pictures please!
I'll be interested in hearing how that works out.. have you tried living with just the left and right vents? Which really means just the left vent since the right one doesn't pivot far enough to direct a stream of air on the driver.. IIRC.
yes i have; it's around 80 to 90% of the original airflow. especially when you block all 3 top vents and leave left only.
you can also do left and right, still strong enough @~80% (center shutoff)
Note percentages are just my gut estimates
i will be getting tints soon.
even before i blocked the airvents, theres a huge greenhouse/heating effect during 20ºC +
Indeed - one of the worst jobs on my
Boxster
was removing the vents (I had to reassemble the slats in a few - they were disengaged and couldn't achieve it in the car, had to do it at my desk..) It seems like it would be easy - it wasn't at all. It was painful, with numerous small cuts and jabs involved in doing it.
that definitely discourages me.. there has to be a better way at accessing the hazard switch signal (and i'm also interested in the door lock signal too) ...
(w/o damaging the factory wiring)
Door lock button is easy - just press on it too hard. You can reach it through the top of the radio compartment (BTDT when someone pressed it too hard..) The other one... well... I can't even find it in the factory diagrams so I can't say if it's something stupid like a CanBus switch with a separate light circuit. It certainly wouldn't surprise me if it was.
If you haven't already bought the Tesla style headunit - you might take a look at the thread in 987 electronics/mods on the Chinese big-screen one that fits right into the dash, but gives you buttons/knobs and a large screen.. (about 8" diag).
This might work for you.

I remember seeing a 10" Android based that had an adjustable telescoping 2Din mount. At the moment I can't remember the brand - possibility ATOTO since I was looking at their products. It would likely allow you to tilt the display enough to access those buttons occasionally when you need. It occurs to me that you could just lock the door with the key fob in the rare case it is needed. Or you could set the car to automatically lock - either when the engine is started or after the trigger speed is reached. IIRC, something like 5kph. It can be setup with any scanner that supports
Porsche
coding like
ThinkDiag
,
Piwis
,Durametric Pro.
im using an xav 9500es.. will post pictures soon on the hazard/door lock switch.. but honestly it is quite daunting because i know the vents will break given my car is 2006.
They may or may not - depending on the environment the car has been used in and if it's been garaged when not used.
Never fear though - just for fun on
Aliexpress
I punched in a search for
Porsche 987
. Back came thousands of items, but among them are - replacement vent fronts, available in gray/w/chrome, black/w/chrome or plain black. The price was around $30 each, less if you bought all 4. There are LOTS of things sold by
Aliexpress
that surprise me, it seems no part is too small for the Chinese manufacturers not to reproduce it at a fraction of a
Porsche
price.
Regarding the vents, I had one go bad under warranty and received the factory manual page relating to said vent. The center of the bottom of those vents has a small tab, you really have to look at it closely. You push that tab, it clicks, and the entire assembly slides out like butter.
Boris - can you do a screen-capture from the manual and post it here.. I seem to recall there being two clips that had to be pulled toward the center of the vents on mine, they stuck into the vent slightly and had a square hole in the end to poke something through to move them toward the center. Or that could be just old memory failing..
FWIW -
AliExpress
is the place for replacements of the vents - around $10-15 last time I checked. I'm absolutely certain they're identical to what
Porsche
would sell you since I think these are from the vendor who makes them for
Porsche
. It wouldn't be worth anyone's time to go to the trouble of reproducing these and hoping to get rich selling 1 or 2 on
AliExpress
. Possibly like the Cayenne door handles I bought from China. Absolutely identical to the
Porsche
ones, right down to the "Made in Belgium" cast into the side of the plastic. 1/5th the price of Porsches.
Went and looked at
AliExpress
- they used to sell the entire vent assembly (front section with the slats and the rear section with the butterfly valve.. now it appears they're just selling the front section, which they claim is improved over the original:

If that's what is broken on yours - the Aliexpress sounds like a great deal.
Don, you're probably correct about it being 2 clips, top and bottom makes more sense. This was 11 years ago before my move, I don't have the copy of that single manual page anymore. I just typed this information out because finding those clips without knowledge would take some amount of time.
