Mine has been doing that for at least the last 20,000 miles, and has used less than 1 litre of oil in that whole time, so I'm assuming it's not terminal...

It seems to have got worse since my 48k major service (after the oil change using castrol SLX 0-30).

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

14 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi I have had my 996 (1999) for one year now, but i have a problem? When I start my car first thing in the morning when it is cold it rattles for around 1 minute then goes away. It seems to have got worse since my 48k major service (after the oil change using castrol SLX 0-30). This problem has only started in the last six months. Can anyone shed any light on it cheers?

POST 3Original post

Isnt that a normal feature of hydraulic tappets? The have a bit of a rattle on start up from cold.

POST 4Original post

I don't have the issue on my 996, but other owners have reported rattling on a cold startup. I believe this is not concidered to be a problem. I'm sure someone will be along soon to confirm or deny.

POST 5Original post

Mine has been doing that for at least the last 20,000 miles, and has used less than 1 litre of oil in that whole time, so I'm assuming it's not terminal... Not got noticeably worse or better in that time either...

POST 6Original post

My old 996 did this at startup. Never got better or worse.

POST 7Original post

I have a similar tappet noise on start up for few seconds Had the OPC check it (they had it over night) but they consider it normal. A minute seems a long time though - may be worth getting it checked

POST 10Original post

trying ? and if you own a 996 with PSE the problem sounds worse but isnt

POST 11Original post

My 996 doesn't sound like a bucket full of rusty nails on startup ... should I be worried

POST 12Original post

Mine doesn't but it's only got 2000 miles on it I used to remember putting in a tin of slick50 years ago(oil additive)... it's like monkey grease for trailers but wayyyyyy thicker. Engine never made a noise after that.

POST 13Original post

as above, mine does it for a few seconds but a minute does seem a bit long. did it do it at all before service?

POST 14Original post

A mechanic that shall remain nameless said the sound was coming from the bottom of my engine... Wonder what he means - the bolts on the crankcase perhaps...   Think his experience of boxer engines might be a bit limited, looking under the front lid for the engine was a bit of a hint (only joking!)
