I feel they are clearly trying to make money out of me for something which doesn't need replacing really........as a result i'm loathe to take the car over to them to get the switch replaced even though i've paid them £895 for the years extended warranty....which covers the switch....in case they come up with some crap about replacing the barrel and muck around with the barrel so it does need replacing!!

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi guys. Hope someone can help. I've recently experienced problems with the ignition barrel on my 99'C4 Cab. Got in the other day and everything was fine, but when i turned the ignition off after driving, i couldn't get the key out!. The barrel wouldn't turn that last bit and then lock and release the key! Eventually managed to get it out wiggling it using pliers. Its now difficult to get the key to go in and the same problems removing it. I've tried a bit of silicon release spray but its not freeing up at all. The car obviously assumes the key is still in the ignition after removal as it wont allow me to lock the car using the fob and the horn beeps. Have phoned OPC and they state the barrel starts to seize sometimes and they would normally have to replace. They reckon the electrical contact might be knackered which is covered under the extended warranty, but the barrel is not! Has anyone else ever experienced this problem? and if so are they being honest with me or should the barrel be covered too? Thanks.

POST 2Original post

1st time I've heard of this on the 996 but sounds like new barrels are needed

POST 3Original post

Yep common prob. Seen 3 996 need them. Infact porsche in sutton cold said they last on average 50k. They also said that its a fairly common problem.

POST 4Original post

Have you tried the spare key? Keys wear quickly if they are on a bunch of keys as they rub together. Although saying that the Porsche key is cut in such a way that this might not happen.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for the replies so far guys. I have tried the spare key and the problem is exactly the same, so i'm sure its nothing to do with the key. If its a common problem as also stated, does anyone know if i will therefore need new door locks as well and new keys? Should the barrell fault be covered by the extended warranty??? I'm hoping so.

POST 6Original post

Hi Glenn, I was told last week the barrel isn't covered - ~£150 + VAT. I had similar problems to you with my 98 996 last week. My car is in for some unrelated warranty work and the OPC recommended the ignition switch was changed for free under the extended as he thought it was a bit stiff. Trouble is the ignition barrel isn't covered under warranty so that's going to cost me £150 + VAT which I agreed to. The barrel has been ordered from Germany so will take a few days to ship over. I picked the car up with the new switch only on Friday so I had the car for the weekend. When I switched on the ignition the radio didn't come on automatically, and when driving I noticed the wipers weren't working - hmmm. When I turned off the ignition the radio didn't switch off, and the speedo, time display etc stayed on! When I came to lock the car with the remote nothing happened, though the light on the key and the sensor in the car flashed. Tried the key in the door lock - drivers door locked with a beep from the horn, but the passenger door and filler cap were not locked - oh dear. In the end I locked the car using the emergency procedure - 3 turns in the door lock - and dropped the car back into the OPC in the morning as I didn't fancy having to get the car towed after the dash lights had drained the battery. OPC mechanic reckons the contacts in the ignition switch are not making the required contacts in the barrel. I'm waiting for the barrel to be fitted this week and we'll see what happens!

POST 7Original post

had exactly the same problem 2 months ago. turned out to be two problems. 1st was ignition switch which was causing key to stick, wipers, radio inop etc and not return to position 1 (key out position) and 2nd was roller tip at top of barrel which was reading that key was still in barrel and wouldn't let it lock and leave radio on etc. switch fairly easy to replace but did require a wee bit of karma sutra flexibility with head in at pedal box. two small torx screws and switch pulls off. no need to remove barrel etc and when that replaced made key movement much easier. haven't done anything with barrel yet as only very rarely sticks now and a flick with the key at top of barrel sorts it out hope this helps p.s. switch was £13, genuine porsche from company called german and swedish

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

ignition barrel probs Thanks for your replies. Very helpful indeed. I've managed to get hold of an ignition switch for about £11 brand new, and so will be attempting to fit it when the rain stops!! I'm quite annoyed by the fact that my OPc said that they would have to replace the barrel as well as when this starts seizing up its best to do so...... Its clear from all the threads that its not the barrel that seizes, but the faulty ignition switch that causes the barrel to feel faulty/sticky..... :x Or should i just tell them to replace the switch and thats all????? Or do i just replace it myself???? :?:

POST 9Original post
