Since it came with no instructions, I used B&M's instructions.

Suggestion
I wasn't interested in modifying the sfhiter console as if anything went wrong there it was much more expensive to replace vs the $65 for bushings.

Suggestion
There is a reason that the B&M and reputable manufacturers cost more, it is because they test their products before selling them and have people on staff to answer your support calls/questions, etc.

Suggestion
Got it just right so didn't have to use the threaded portion at all to tighten up any play.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

In any event, when ordering Chinese knockoff shifters (which I discovered is what they are) some extra steps are required, but in the end it worked fine and am very happy with the result at no extra expense to me.
I decided to give the epman/ebay short shifter a try. $60 bucks vs $400 sounds appealing and from the reviews everyone says it works fine. I bought it from
amazon
and this ended up saving me. It arrived about a week after I ordered it, and I went to install it last Tuesday.
Since it came with no instructions, I used B&M's instructions. The instructions from B&M was missing quite a few steps, it asks you to remove the top trim piece of the shifter without removing the knee bolsters. The point of no return is when you start cutting the stock bushings out, I found out the hard way because the bushings the came with the epman shifter were too big and wouldn't fit. I contacted the seller and sent them pictures of the part in question and how it would not fit, their reply was to blame it on the install and then after that they said they couldn't help me. I contacted
amazon
and they investigated, once their investigation was done(1 day), they had the seller refund my money and let me keep the part. I'm still left with a car that I cant return to stock, at least not without buying a new shift console. I read on
Pelican Parts
that they sold aftermarket bushings, I called them but they didn't know anything about that. I found a vendor that would sell me a set of aftermarket bushings for $65
https://phenixengineering.com/shop/porsche-997-gt3-style-billet-shift-bushing-kit/
, I kept that in the back of my mind as a back up. I searched to see if others have had the same issue, I couldn't find any post on it, but I did find a video on youtube
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iJv0wI72aRg
. I went to the local hardware store and bought some 40 grit aluminum oxide sand paper for my power sander and went to work. It took about 30 mins of sanding on each bushing to finally get them to fit. Once the bushings were in everything else was smooth after that. After I was done with the install the seller contacted me and said he had another customer that had the same issue and they trimmed the shifter console. I wasn't interested in modifying the sfhiter console as if anything went wrong there it was much more expensive to replace vs the $65 for bushings.
Sorry to hear about your troubles, not sure why you couldn't just get some replacement bushings from Porsche but hopefully your solution worked out. There is a reason that the B&M and reputable manufacturers cost more, it is because they test their products before selling them and have people on staff to answer your support calls/questions, etc. The old saying about getting what you pay for certainly rings true here.
If you are not happy with the result, the shift right solution from function first is basically a set of replacement bushings in stainless steel with ball bearings action, and a replacement shifter linkage. It does not change the throw, but it does smooth the action quite a bit and is certainly preferable to the stock shifter. It costs around $250, and would be an easy install since you have already tackled the hardest part, which is removing the factory bushings.
You can find it here.

I know this is a late reply based on what has already happened.
Same situation, same result. The bushings are tight as hell. I ordered two of these shift kits. One from ebay came with the wrong angle on the shifter. I tried unscrewing the shifter lever to flip it to no avail. It must have been epoxied on and the seller refunded me in full. Ordered the
next
one from
Amazon
and the pics showed the correct shifter angle but I received the same configuration. Configured for a right hand car - only this time, it unscrewed and I was able to flip it. Success!
The problem came when it came to installing the bushings. Tight as hell and seemingly impossible. Well, took a wooden mallet and hammered them in. Eventually forced them in with some solid blows on a workbench. Now, the shifter is great. It probably would have slipped way easier if I had lubed the bushings.

Damn, this sucks.
I'm probably one of the voices of encouragement, as I bought one of those fleabay kits on other people's recommendations. The parts themselves look good enough, but I haven't yet installed them.
I'd probably
dremel
the bushing socket on the stock shifter cage.
My backup plan would be to get a scratch & dent model of
Numeric
's shifter @ $600 if it all goes really bad. At least I know what those are supposed to feel like.
So sorry that you had this issue. I will be interested to see what mine looks like, once I am ready for the installation.
I do have to agree with Ken on this. I put in a short shifter in my first
Cayman S
. It was well made, went in with no issues and worked fine for close to the three years that I had the car as a DD.
Just to be clear, I got (essentially) one of the bay kits and was able to make it work no problem after hammering in the bushings. If you have issues, lightly lube them before you pound them into the plastic. I'd to definitely try this route before getting out the
dremel
. You want the bushings to be nice and tight and mine are. Basically got $400+ in value for $60 - all it took was an extra ten minutes to tap the bushings in.
Good luck and let us know how it turns out for you.
I think I got wind of this product from you on Reddit. No worries, I knew what I was getting myself into, I wanted to save a few bucks from having to spend $400. In the end it worked out, but I had to modify the product to make it work. I made this post so that if others were thinking of the product to be aware that there might be modifications needed. The
cayman
is not my daily driver so having it out of service for a few days is not an issue for me, but for others that are trying to do this over the weekend and drive to work on Monday, just giving them a heads up.
Sorry for posting to an old thread. Ebay shifters are still flaky.
I found my bearing cups were too big as well and would not fit into the carriers. I have a lathe so I just machined a few thou off and put a little taper on the front edge so it started easy.
Then I found that the pins that go in those cups were too long to allow the cups to seat far enough to to put the c clips on. I removed one of the pins and shortened it about 1/16 of an inch in the lathe.
Got it just right so didn't have to use the threaded portion at all to tighten up any play.
I also drilled a small hole in the plastic bearing after removing the threaded adjuster assembly. I am thinking I can pull the adjuster...add a dab of grease and thread it back in and have the grease enter the shifter cup with the shifter installed.
I really love the shift feel and the throws are just right....
But it is not a finished product out of the box....
