This is not a probability of success.

Reported cause
Turned out to be a faulty door lock mechanism which got sorted on the warranty.
Leading evidence: 'door lock mechanism' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'door lock mechanism' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check ) and see if they can shed any light' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Have had lower trailing arm and track rod end replaced on one side to no avail, have discounted the steering rack and my personal suspicion is it's the drop links but I've spent too much money and spend too little time driving to justify taking it any further for the time being - good luck getting this sorted Dejan and please report back!

I'll try my OPC (I'm thinking of the 110 point check) and see if they can shed any light on it.

Suggestion
During the test drive it was fine, but then driving home, and every time after about an hour I too get this rubbery-knocking from the front end.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
15 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

Wish the OPC said its a characteristic of the car rather than saying that everything is fine without a reason for the slight knocking sensation which Im inclined to agree as it reverts back to normal when it cools down.
Hello ALL
I have to say my 996 c4 has "character"...after new rads/condenser and MAF in the first 4 months....
The rear spoiler sticks on one side
The power windows go up by themselves after it has rained
I feel a knocking sensation from the front end/steering wheel after an hours drive (and not before)
I will get these sorted out eventually, but there is never a dull moment....
Does anyoneone have issues or have I bought a dodgy one?
I get the knocking on my C4 after an hours drive. Took it to OPC and they said they couldnt find anything wrong. Does the knocking go away once the car has cooled down ie you leave it overnight. When you drive it the next day it has gone only for the knocking to come back again after an hour?
Yes thats right, it doesnt really bother me now that I've had it looked at by OPC west London and it doesnt affect the steering, its just a touch annoying.
My suspicions are like yours, that being a 4 wheel drive something expands causing this.

Is yours a Tip or manual?
I'm glad I found this thread because my car does the same. Except it's a C2! (1999MY). During the test drive it was fine, but then driving home, and every time after about an hour I too get this rubbery-knocking from the front end.
I've eliminated the steering (I think). I took it to Chris Turner as he's near my work, but of course it had quietened down by then and he couldn't do anything. In my case it seems to be after an hour of fast driving.
If it's just a characteristic, then fine, except I keep thinking something major is about to give way at the front. And knowing my luck it'll be when I'm caning it!!
I'll try my OPC (I'm thinking of the 110 point check) and see if they can shed any light on it.
Latest development.
I enquired about the knocking with RGA after posting here, who from the symptoms reckoned it was something to do with the roll bar and the links in the front suspension. Respect for getting it right just from my explanation over the phone, OPC initially couldnt spot anything and said all is fine.
As the car was bought from an OPC 2 months ago and I had previously bought it back within a week of buying the car, I gave them a call and arranged for an hour drive with one of their mechanics. Sure enough after an hour the knocing started, he had drive and said the same thing... roll bars, links loosenining...something to that effect, nothing major or dangerous but due to expansion a gap no larger than a cigarette paper occurs causing the knocking.
The difficulty for mechanics to spot this is that the gap cannot be spotted on the ramps, the drive we had is the way to spot this. Car is now with the OPC and has been for a week. Hopefully will be perfect soon.
LOL - my '99 C2 does exactly the same and has done since I got it a year ago at 48k miles... have just learned to live with it as I got fed up taking it to the OPC and indies trying to get a diagnosis. Have had lower trailing arm and track rod end replaced on one side to no avail, have discounted the steering rack and my personal suspicion is it's the drop links but I've spent too much money and spend too little time driving to justify taking it any further for the time being - good luck getting this sorted Dejan and please report back!
Cheers,
Chris
I'm another one who's glad to see this. My 52 plate 43k C2 makes this noise as I drive up the ramp at the work car park at the end of my 40 minute commute. It's always fine when I leave though (The car is always left at work for a few days as I go abroad, so is always completely cold.) I was about to visit some independents to get it looked at, but like everyone else I don't feel it has any noticeable affect on the steering, and there's nothing in there I can see that's loose. Reckon I'll just live with it for the time being now I see I'm not the only one.
Was hoping to bring good news. Picked the car up this evening, a drive to Marlow and back to west London and an hour later the knocking returned. Not any worse but not any better. Going to have to phone the OPC again tomorrow.
What on earth can it be? Why can't it go away?
Im noticing a trend in that most owners who's cars are around the 50k mark are experiencing this.
And to top it off a great day, a penalty notice was waiting for me for dropping off with a photo of my better half getting out of my car at a bus stop as we were stuck in traffic...great
