I am looking into doing a muffler delete for my 2008 Cayman S, but am concerned as to whether it would pass emissions regulations. From my research, the Cayman has 4 cats, two attached to the headers and another two attached to the mufflers.
Emissions are measured in grams of CO2 per km, does anyone have any insight into how much the Cayman S would generate if i were to remove the muffler, which would include the two cats attached to it. The limit where I am is 145g per km so if removing two attached to the muffler would make it go over this limit, would replacing the muffler with a standalone cat that excludes the muffler be a viable option?
And as for how loud it would make the engine, the limit is 95 db, would a Cayman S with no mufflers go above this limit? The db level is measured at half the max engine rpm, so around 3500-4000 for me.
You think this will sound good??? Doubt it.
It will be too loud, especially if you log highway miles. I had an NYS inspectors license and a " test pipe" on my Cosworth Vega in my youth. It sounded horrible and I'm sure the neighbors hated me for it.
Heard a 3.8L 911 that sounded pretty good the owner said all they did was a muffler delete. Being a similar bore and them both being flat sixes makes me believe mine would sound similar.
What makes you or anyone else think you can defeat emissions equipment? If you can't comply with the law maybe don't drive.
I'm not asking on how to get around it, I'm asking if anyone knows what the CO2 emission level would be without the cats attached to the muffler to make sure it would be under the legal limit. Same for the db limit.
Cats reduce hydrocarbons, they don't reduce CO2.
Whether or not it can pass emissions is going to depend on the state.
Some require no (or very few) changes.
Some only care that the ODB codes look good.
For what it is worth, here is the sound of my friend's 2008 BS idling sound WITHOUT the muffler. As we were installing a new FVD Brombacher, he wanted to hear the idling sound without the stock muffler so we just started the car to hear - he didn't rev any higher unfortunately. Since it is not my car, I masked everything
Thanks, any idea what that db level was at idle?
Yep, still planning on it. Thinking I'll go to a mechanic and have it removed in a temporary way so that it can be tested to make sure it meets noise and emission requirements, then if it passes then create a more permanant solution, otherwise ill just put it back on and look at what options I have for keeping but modifying the muffler. Not sure if this 'temporary' removal is possible but looking into it.
