Porsche say you can use many different oil ranges from 0w-30 to 10w-40 dependant on how its driven.

Hi looking for some suggestions on oil. I always do an oil and filter change every 3k miles between full services. At present its on Mobil 1 but have been reading further into it and have been advised to use Silkolene Pro S 5w-40. Anyone else had any dealings with this? The car is a 1999 high mileage 996 C4 (108k). And my driving is mostly on country roads quite spiritedly!!! (well as it should be driven). I always allow the car to reach temperature before exceeding 3000 revs. Porsche say you can use many different oil ranges from 0w-30 to 10w-40 dependant on how its driven. Any Advice?

5W-40 or 0W-40 are all ok, you need a Porsche approved oil and although Silkolene Pro S is one of the finest Oil's out there (I've been using that in my 911's for years without a problem) due to marketing spin it is no longer Porsche approved, although it is more than up to the job. So if you're out of warranty then Silkolene is a fine oil to keep you car in top top condition and far better than some OPC oil's in use.
