Hi, was on the phone with FL and they just got off the phone as well and stated that Oakley has not yet fitted a shifter to the Cayman model yet...

There is a clutch pedal and it is used for downshifting ONLY.

You can shift up without the clutch by letting up on the throttle and pulling the shift lever (same as on a motorcycle used on the track).

Suggestion
In ideal circumstances you would use a dog box, but Subaru used a similar set up on their WRC cars successfully in 2000/2001 where they converted their H pattern box and with some clever electronics as you got hold of the lever the engine whet into a kind of misfire to allow the gear to change easier.

this doesn't look to be a true sequential system...you would also have to change the stock box to a dog box...

car does not arrive until late Feb and I am not planning any mods until I drive the car for a season...seems like a nice alternative to the PDK for those of us who still want to use our left foot...and for those of us like me who are still hoping to get back into Skippy's formula cars(sequential box)...a good way to keep your chops up on shifting.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Anyone else notice that Farnbacher Loles is now handling Oakley Design products. One of which is a sequential shifter for the Cayman. I mentioned this product once before but got no play on it. For those of us looking at sticking to a manual box...could be a good way upping shift speed against the PDK...anyone seen any reviews etc?
Looks like other goodies like aero stuff coming too.

I always wonder, why do people like sequential but dislike double clutch trannies like PDK. After all PDK can act like a sequential when you want it to plus it can act like an auto when you're tired!
My wheels came from Oakley Design, I must say the quality of the products they market and their organizational setup is up there with the best.
They were before just another performance parts reseller but this has changed this year. They have become a company that now designs, produces and tests under hard track conditions a range of high end performance parts.
I have a couple of projects that I will be working on with them in the New Year and I must say I am looking forward to this very much.
Pardon me if I'm wrong, but sequential cars do NOT have a manual clutch do they? At least not the Ferrari's!
OTOH, PDK has 2 clutches, not just one. Yes they arent manual but that makes them even faster!
My understanding of it is that is just a change in the linkage...instead of H pattern gears are changed in line...
you must go up or down in sequence...big advantage over H is speed and no chance of missing a gear and over revving...you still must work the clutch pedal...am I wrong?
I talked to Oakley recently about becoming a sponsor here but they weren't ready to go yet because their product lineup wasn't complete yet for the Cayman and they hadn't made official announcements yet about the FL relationship.
The Farnbacher relationship is official and they do have an expanding range of products including my carbon fiber wheels and soon a 400mm brake kit with the choice of steel or ceramic rotors for both the Cayman and Boxster. I am also hoping the will come on board as a sponsor

Is there a reliable, good quality way to add a manual sequential paddle shift system onto the steering column with this setup? This would be a dream come true. Sequential manual shifting, using steering column paddles, but also having a pedal clutch for heel and toe driving. It sounds so close!
Maybe someone could rig this to work the Oakley shifter.
Geartronics - Sequential gearbox electronic systems - Pneumatic paddle shift system
Don't know where you heard that.
And 2 paragraphs below your quote,
Rapid gear changes without the clutch yes.
Without lifting because of electronics.
Still use the clutch to get rolling in first.
It will be interesting to find out the details...it looks to me to be simply a shift linkage that selects gears sequentially mated to the stock manual CS gear box...if this is true the question I would have is there any real speed advantage other than better control over missed shifts? Hopefully we will find out soon
this doesn't look to be a true sequential system...you would also have to change the stock box to a dog box...
as above you still have a clutch even with a true sequential but you have options that allow quicker shifts with less power loss
does anyone make a true dog box to fit the Cayman? the Geartronics setup (which looks very cool) is really a racing shifter that would require a dog box.
Interesting thread.
After driving a dual clutch car (the GT-R) and reading the reviews of PDK (which sounds just like the GT-R box), this sequential shift system seems like a solution to a problem that doesn't exist in 2009.
Dog rings and monkey shifts? No thanks.
Wanna bet that future "GT3" cars have a PDK type arrangement...maybe even with paddles instead of buttons? Of course Porsche might be so far behind the curve that they miss the next gen GT3, but that is not surprising as they just learned about the "iPod".
Most race Porsche's are set up this way (Cup cars RSRs, etc). There is a clutch pedal and it is used for downshifting ONLY. You can shift up without the clutch by letting up on the throttle and pulling the shift lever (same as on a motorcycle used on the track). There area also electronic enhancements that do not require letting up on the throttle for upshifts (it retards the ignition or something like that, to allow full throttle shifting).
I have played around in a friend's cup car and that is how his is set up. Very different than PDK
The Engineer I have dealt with is on vacation at the moment, but I will speak to him about the shifter for you together with another project I have planned to do with these guys.
I Have a meeting set up with Jon Oakley on Thursday 8th Jan 09 at the Autosport show in Birmingham England.
Jon wants to see me to discuss future developments for the Cayman, as it's pointless us both doing the same, or similar things. Which I completely agree with.
Going back to the Sequential Gear Lever set up. In ideal circumstances you would use a dog box, but Subaru used a similar set up on their WRC cars successfully in 2000/2001 where they converted their H pattern box and with some clever electronics as you got hold of the lever the engine whet into a kind of misfire to allow the gear to change easier. This worked simply as your body earthed out the system.
Anyway I'm sure Jon at some point will come on board, but for the moment I think all his parts are now available through Farmbacher-Loles
Tess,
you are correct about parts availability through FL but I have not spoken to Kip with regards to pricing as I have dealt directly with Oakley in the past and paid in UK pounds. I think we will find out the answers to the questions around the same time, we will see. I know someone from Oakley will be across here sometime this month (He owes me a beer or two btw) to do a suspension comparison amongst other things.
Hi, was on the phone with FL and they just got off the phone as well and stated that Oakley has not yet fitted a shifter to the Cayman model yet... So the stil have to try it, work out bugs, come up with a price etc..
So a few more months is what I was told...
If you didn't see it... there is a brief review of it the June 09 Excellence...i the article on the Farnbacher Loles GT 3 S...also was discussed in another Ex article I saw recently...have to look it up...I still need to call FL and see if a Cayman version is available but I am no big rush... car does not arrive until late Feb and I am not planning any mods until I drive the car for a season...seems like a nice alternative to the PDK for those of us who still want to use our left foot...and for those of us like me who are still hoping to get back into Skippy's formula cars(sequential box)...a good way to keep your chops up on shifting. Also a big plus is removing to the dreaded over rev on a missed shift. Back wen they were still running H pattern saw a guy drop into 2nd instead 4th while accelerating
up no name straight(LRP)...he instantly swapped ends and wiped out the rear end while doing some serious landscaping...managed to walk away though.
