I did recently (about 3-4 months ago) change the LEDs to a newer "360" type - still haven't vented the housings.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

Has anyone tried venting their headlight housing to allow for extra cooling of LED bulbs? Seems the fan on them isn’t going to do much good in a sealed compartment.

POST 2Original post

I can't recall anyone doing this. I am not certain it's needed. I've been running LEDs in my '09 since I got it 4 years ago, and haven't had any of them fail for any reason. I did recently (about 3-4 months ago) change the LEDs to a newer "360" type - still haven't vented the housings. I think I'd be concerned with the housing accumulating moisture from damp air moving in and out of it as it heats and cools down. They're fairly well sealed as they come from the factory.

POST 3Original post

+1. I've had aftermarket HID and LED bulbs for many years. I've never had an heat failure of LED bulbs, even without a fan. I think Porsche designed a sealed enclosure for a reason. I know dirt and dust can accumulate outside the housing, so it surely could get inside, along with moisture, if it was vented.

And the factory headlights don't. The Cayenne ones have a vent in the bottom with some sort of filter material - might be Goretex... that's just to let the pressure build-up caused by heating the air in the housing disappear. I can promise you the LED lightsources produce less heat than the halogen sources they're replacing. The halogen are much less efficient at converting current to light, the part of the current that isn't converted into light comes off the bulb as heat. Even the power used by an LED (typically 35 Watts) vs a halogen (55 Watts) should tell you something. It's making more light with less power. Guess what it isn't doing? Wasting power creating heat. So far NO ONE has reported a problem with their LED overheating, and that's what the OP was asking about.
