Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

12 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi My 996 c4 has developed a continuous whine coming from the front (i think) at motorway speeds and seems to get louder when coming off the throttle. I have tried depressing the clutch and it seems to have no effect as does dabbing the brakes. Any Ideas? Thanks in advance.

POST 2Original post

Let the wife travel inside the car, not in the boot?

POST 5Original post

is there any effect on the noise if you turn left or right ?

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

NO CHANGE in noise when turning,

POST 7Original post

Whining is normally wheel bearing. Jack the car up and see if there is any play in the wheels.

POST 8Original post

Mine had the same symptoms although on a C2. New gearbox @ 7k ish. Thanks Mr warranty

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

did your whine in neutral at highish speed? hope its wheel bearing

POST 10Original post

The only time it didnt whine was when when it was stopped. It was an internal gearbox bearingthat had/was in the process of collapsing.

POST 11Original post

If it is a gearbox, and you have no wty, then don't despair- my local specialist can now rebuild gearboxes for a good deal less than £7k.

POST 12Original post

I think Fearnsport will rebuild a box for around £3k ! But lets hope this is only a wheel bearing !
