Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

On the first two attempts, the engine started almost instantly (took almost no cranking), but then ran off straight away.
Leading evidence: 'Run off straight away' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Disconnect mass air sensor' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

To test the fuel pump u need to put a gauge on the fuel system.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I took the car for a drive earlier stopped for about 40 minutes, then attempted to start the car again.
On the first two attempts, the engine started almost instantly (took almost no cranking), but then ran off straight away.
I opened the engine compartment to look/ smell for anything obvious, then attempted again and it started normally.
I have found this issue on multiple other threads, but the query I had in my case is that when I was parking the car, I stalled it (as I was where I needed to be I didn't restart at the time).
As I've not had this issue before I wondered if the stalled shut off could have affected it? I tried restarting twice once I got home about 45 mins apart and no issue.
E-gas or cable throttle in your car? In case of the latter maybe the cable is no longer guided properly at the throttle body itself thus cracking the throttle plate itself slightly open leading to high revs.
Is that what you mean by 'ran off straightaway'?
Tbh even after reading your post several times I'm not sure what your asking exactly. Please describe only the sequence of events that lead to the engine behaviour you're asking about.
What does this prove, am I hoping it does or doesn't start if MAF is disconnected?
With regards to fuel pump, is there a way to test?
I'm due a service this week so may see if the garage can pick up on if there is an issue.
It's e-gas I believe as it's 2003 model.
I started the engine and it seemed to spring to not life quicker than normal, but then stalls almost straight away. It did this twice in a row before starting normally. I've owned it for 2 months and driven weekly and not had this issue previously.
by disco the map the computer will default to a preset program and run the car. If it works there r a few things that inpact this sensor and will help us understand a little more. To test the fuel pump u need to put a gauge on the fuel system.
Ok thanks, understood. But so far this is a one-off issue which I've not been able to replicate. The car is otherwise starting and running fine with the MAF connected, I get that if it was a persistent issue or engine was rough this would help to eliminate the MAF.
It was the fact I'd stalled the car when I parked it, made me wonder if this perhaps affected fuel pressure or engine position that would affect the next start? I guess that's what at least I'm hoping for anyway!
Edit: just to be clear on the above an my OP (in case it didn't come across) when I say I stalled when parking, I mean I let the clutch up to quickly as I parked and caused the engine to stall, as opposed to the engine stalling of its own accord.
