I first thought the pads where low so replaced them at the same time cleaned the rear drums out and greased and adjusted.
Leading evidence: 'Clean rear drums out and greased' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'wheel bearing, half shaft component, or something else' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check entire rear parking brake assembly carefully' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

My rotors were badly rusted, and the pads were old and worn, so I just replaced all my brakes (rotors, pads, hardware, sensors), but not the parking brake.

I also replaced the rotors, so there wouldnt have been anything between the rotor and the shield at that point.

Suspected cause
I havent actually climbed under the car yet, but I suspect a bad wheel bearing, half shaft component, or something else.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi i have a horrible squeak from the n/s rear of my 996 . I first thought the pads where low so replaced them at the same time cleaned the rear drums out and greased and adjusted. but noise is still there. So then took the slight edge from the inside and outside of the discs . But noise is still there. The noise is heard as the wheel revolves and adjusts to speed but goes quiet on left hand turns , not as noticeable when excellerating . But is really annoying . Can anyone give any advice . Thanks
I assume you are referring to the rear drum parking brake pads. There are three components that come to mind (1) rear disc brake pads, (2) rear drum parking brake pads and assembly, (3) the rear wheel bearing. I have had the little spring that holds the rear drum parking brake pads against the backing plate break twice. First time it broke it allowed be parking brake pad to rub against the drum making a rubbing noise. The second time it broke it fell into the drum area and made a really bad noise. Check the entire rear parking brake assembly carefully. Make sure it is correctly assembled and properly adjusted. Second, make sure it is not one of the disc brake pads sticking (not retracting) thus rubbing on the disc. Eliminating these two areas leaves you with a bad bearing. It should be evident with the car jacked up so you can spin the wheel and listen to where the noise is coming from where your problem is.
Jack up the rear end and see if you have any play when you try to wiggle that wheel. If the bearing is starting to go, you may be able to feel the looseness.
If it is the bearing, you probably want to address this sooner than later. If a bearing is making noise, it's also making heat, which is bad.
You describe the sound as a "horrible squeak". If, in fact, it is more of a grinding "swish, swish, swish" at low speeds it may be as minor as the brake dust shield rubbing against the brake rotor. Remove the wheel and directly behind (inboard of) the rotor is a thin metal dust shield. Put your head in the wheel well and look at the rotor from behind and beneath it and you should be able to see if the shield is rubbing the rotor. If so, simply use a thin putty knife scraper and apply a LITTLE pressure to bend the shield away from the rotor.
I have a rubbing, squeaking, scratching sound coming from the rear of my car. I think its just the driver side. It only happens when coasting or braking, but not under acceleration.
My rotors were badly rusted, and the pads were old and worn, so I just replaced all my brakes (rotors, pads, hardware, sensors), but not the parking brake.
With the car jacked up, with the rear wheels unstrung and spinning, the noise is not there. When I turn either rear wheel by hand, the noise is not there. When I engage the parking brake, or brake normally, the sound doesnt change.
I havent actually climbed under the car yet, but I suspect a bad wheel bearing, half shaft component, or something else.
Any ideas?
I did inspect the disc shield for wear and didnt see any. I also replaced the rotors, so there wouldnt have been anything between the rotor and the shield at that point.
Heres a video of the noise:

Did u bed in the pads? U may have to hard break a few times. U may also a bad piston on the caliper thats cockeying the bad? Does not sound like a wheel bearing.
I did a few stops from 35mph down to 5; repeated 4-5 times. Then some higher speed stops from 75 to 5 using a lot of braking pressure.
It could be a stuck caliper, thats true. I guess I should probably jack up that side, inspect, take the rotor back off and check for the parking brake rubbing, check the tire, etc. It does kinda sound like a brake rub noise.
Hi
@Mike Murphy
, did you ever resolve this issue? I have the same noise on my passenger side. I've replaced all the parking brake hardware and adjusted everything several times with no luck. On a pretty fresh set of pads and rotors as well. The noise for me is still the same before and after replacing the parking brake hardware.
P.s. apologies for the necro thread. I saw Mike had posted that video in 2021; didn't realize op was from 2014.
Oh, boy, I cant believe I didnt update the thread.
@sweet victory
I took my car to my Indy mechanic. They took off the wheel bearings, both sides, took out the half shafts, couldnt find anything wrong with the bearings or CV joints or anything, and put it all back together using factory torque specs. The noise went away!
So my theory is that maybe something was loose and that a re-torque was needed. Note: the wheel bearings require 340lb-ft of torque, so if you happen to have a torque wrench that can go that high, maybe thats the first thing to check.
I'm 99% positive I only have the noise coming from the passenger side. If I open one window at a time and drive along a wall/curb, I only hear it on passenger side.
I'm assuming you replaced the wheel bearings upon reassembly? It doesn't sound like a bad wheel bearing, but I suppose I can't rule that out yet.
My Indy said the wheel bearing looked fine, so they didnt replace it.
My noise was weird. It did not happen under any acceleration, or turning, only coasting. And braking had no effect.
