Suggestion

If it spins freely, it is worn out, if it just turns and immediately slows down or stops then it is still useable (unless you want to replace for maintenance reasons).

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I've been looking to replace my engine belt pulleys on my 2004 4S that's nearing 100K miles. It seems all the pulleys and pulley kits I've seen are for the automatic trans 996/986. Why are there engine pulley differences between the manual and auto cars? Also, all the engine pulleys on my engine have P/N 996-102-120-55 on them regardless of location. However, all the catalogs I've seen list a different pulley for each location.

POST 2Original post

When I replaced mine, they all had the same part number. As far as I know the automatic has the same part numbers as the manual transmission as well. I gave one of my old pulleys to someone who used it to fix a squealing pulley on his 2000 911 with an automatic. I suggested he replace it, but he‘s been driving it for at least 8 months now with a used 996.2 manual pulley.

POST 3Original post

The pulleys are all the same but the hardware is different for each location, the part number includes pulley and hardware.. It looks like for the manual they changed to the 997 part. I don't know why they would not have also for the tip.

POST 4Original post

Basically, the idlers (pulleys) are all the same but the hardware they use to attach is different. You will find a difference in idlers, most older ones are a steel construction, where the newer ones are plastic; both seem to work as well. You can check an idler by spinning it. If it spins freely, it is worn out, if it just turns and immediately slows down or stops then it is still useable (unless you want to replace for maintenance reasons). POST 5Original post

Bumping this thread as I'm in the same position. Looking to replace the lower pulley in my 2003 Targa Tiptronic. Pulley has 996.102.120.55 as part number, but I'm not finding that on here. Looks like 99610211958 is the correct one? How the heck do I know which of the two bolts is the correct one?

This is a source reference. Confirm exact model applicability in the original material.
