Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Discussions that suspect a cause
1

0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.

0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.

Suspected cause

Only problem is fault is so intermittant it will probably be months before I can be sure whether it's sorted it or not!

Outcome qualification: Negation, uncertainty or missing explicit repair resolution overrides the raw extraction signal.

Leading evidence: 'fault is' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'fault is' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

8 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

In the last three days I have had to call the AA twice to get my '02 996 targa tip going. I seem to have an intermittent fault so it will sometimes start no problem, sometimes start after a bit of "a fiddle", and sometimes not start at all. Grrrr. One AA man was very helpfull and seemed to think that it was a starter motor relay issue, the other thought the starter motor itself has gone. Once it gets going it's fine, and drives likes a dream. Going to speak to OPC and Ninemaster today but wanted to know if anyone out there has experienced the same problem and had any advice? Thanks in advance.

POST 2Original post

Could be the DME relay. A quick and simple fix. Even worth getting one and swapping it. I actually carry a spare as this is a regular issue with a less than £10 fix.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Like the sound of that! DME? What does that stand for and where can I get one?

POST 4Original post

Just walk up to the counter in your local OPC and say can I have a DME Relay for my 02 996 C2. Or to save a few quid (and it is only a few quid) go to any of the on-line Porsche spares people and look in electrical. The DME relay is basically the fuel pump relay, and they wear out over time. If it fixes the problem (quite likely) go back to the OPC or on-line retailer and get a second one just in case. Most people recommend if it is older than 5 years to bin it and replace.

POST 5Original post

Hi Sean, I have an intermittant starting fault where my car ('99 C2) sometimes does not start (turns over but does not catch) after a very brief prior start up (e.g. move to another parking space in street etc) so seems like it could be temperature related - the car thinks it's doing a 'warm' start but engine is till cold? Could this be related to the DME relay as above do you think? Cheers, Chris

POST 6Original post

I would swap the relay as the first step in diagnosis. Anyway will mean you have a spare. Otherwise it could be one of the sensors at fault, but I would start with the basics.

POST 7Original post

Thanks Sean, will give that a try. Only problem is fault is so intermittant it will probably be months before I can be sure whether it's sorted it or not! Chris

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

My DME Relay has just arrived in todays post, so I now need to know where and how to fit it?? Any guidance would be greatly appreciated? Thanks
