Eventually figured out that the PO had put too small a battery in. When I replaced the battery again, I used the proper capacity and the issue went away.

I replaced the battery with a similar one when I bought the car.

i use the motor for access to both jump and trickle.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

no current available) a standard charger won't work - in that case you can connect another battery to the flat one and then the charger will kick in, then you can disconnect the good battery.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

In other words, what can you expect if you leave the car for 3 days, a week, longer? I don't want to have to hook up the trickle charger if I don't need to.
You will need to. Unless its your daily driver it'll need a trickle charger. I've heard people have trouble starting 3days after sitting on the short side and definitely by a week of sitting you'll have issues.
Mine sits for weeks at a time.
I don’t drive it more than a day or two some weeks, and depending on my schedule and weather, it can be a while. I do put a maintainer on it pretty soon now because of the snow and salt.
I don’t find any measurable difference in battery discharge whether the car is locked or unlocked. As others have noted, you can’t leave the key in. Ask me how I know.

Well my battery is dead. Mg car was left unlocked & didnt start it for 2 weeks. Was on vacation. Need a new battery?

Dead battery.
You can jump it, but safer to use charger. If it is totally flat (i.e. no current available) a standard charger won't work - in that case you can connect another battery to the flat one and then the charger will kick in, then you can disconnect the good battery.
But if it won't hold a charge you need a new battery.
Allowing a lead acid battery to fully discharge it kills it.
The pain is if the frunk is closed and you have a dead battery.... RTFM.
Cheers
I learn the hard way, all locked up and the battery dead. lol I always un latch the front when I pull it in the garage. Lot easier when you find out its dead. Going get a new battery tender brand maintainer, see if that works. This car eats batteries. But I wasn't locking the doors, will try that now. with the maintainer.
Just want to add that my 99 C2 used to drive me completely mad.
I replaced the battery with a similar one when I bought the car. The battery wouldn't last longer than a week, even when the car was left locked. Eventually figured out that the PO had put too small a battery in. When I replaced the battery again, I used the proper capacity and the issue went away. Can leave the car for weeks now (provided it is locked, leaving open does drain it faster!) Maybe worth checking.
My 996TTs are bad, but my 997tt is even worse, plus it goes into some weird hibernation mode that is difficult to wake it up from sometimes. I leave all late model German cars on trickle. My old air cooled cars can sit for 3mos and fire right up.
The craziest thing I've found in these late cars is if you have lightweight fly/pp/clutch you can push start with barely a crawling of speed and they fire instantly.
Side Note - keeping the trunk unlocked for a jump or trickle charge is annoying. ( pulling the battery cover - etc then re-assembling )
i use the motor for access to both jump and trickle. the thin wire trickle can be used to charge the battery from the motor compartment. on the C2 996 on the right hand side you have the motor you have a big positive connection behind the plastic cover- picture attached ( positive orange ). Then ground to ( ground blue ) or somewhere you prefer
Use this method if i need to jump the car - its way easier than using the fuse box
trickle works well , i slide shoe box size charger under the motor and the 6ft cables still reach the connection , and gently lower the motor lid - unlocked
