Just to confirm, from a cold start, until warm, there is a metallic resonance at 2200rpm. It sounds like a vibrating heatshield.
Porsche have acknowledged the fault and currently have no cure for the problem at this time. I am to be kept informed as and when they have a solution.
Anyone else found this rattle?
Jack
Not noticed that at all. Does the temperature at start make a difference? My garage is heated so could that be why I have not noticed it?
That's awesome, I kind of like the sound. My IS300 makes the same noise at 4k revs but only when the exhaust is cold (cold starts). Once the exhaust system warms up theresonance stops.

This is an old post that I wanted to bring back to life. I am hearing the same rattle from the engine compartment between 3k-3.2k RPM while accelerating through first gear (sometimes second) but only while the engine is cold. It goes away after about 10-15 mins of driving. I assume as others have noted this has to do with the exhuast system perhaps the restictor plate. Has anyone else recently noticed this as the last post regarding the rattle was some time ago. The dealer said he would take a look at it next week, but I was wondering if Porsche may have figured out what the problem since the last post?
From what I understand, it is the sound of a unit that regulates the oil pressure when the motor is cold and the oil is very thick. The oil is fed through lots of little passageways to where it needs to be like a dry sump system, and without the regulator when the oil is cold, the oil would not get through the plumbing at such high pressures. Have the dealer's shop take a listen to the noise you hear, it might be a defective unit - I don't think they're supposed to make any loud noises. If you can, try to figure out a way to be there when the car is started very cold - you might need to leave it there overnight, then go over there in the morning when they start it up... it might be a real hassle to do this, but with you there, you increase your chances of them hearing what you're talking about by a lot.

beez,
Thanks for the insight. I will be sure to post any resolution to the issue once I have a chance to cold start it at the dealership and take one of the techs for a diag ride.
I have the same problem.............any gear around 2200 rpm until engine gets warmed up. Will have the dealer take a look next time I'm in.
Gator,
It is definately a pressure release valve in the oil pump.
I have now had it replace twice. Both times the exact same symptoms.

Thx to JackWood. I'll get on it next week.
My Cayman S is at the dealer as I write this. They are replacing a pressure release valve in the oil pump. Same problem as Jack Wood. Info from this posting was most helpful in identifying and explaining the problem to the service tech. He says he is going to become a member of the Cayman Club.
Great result gatorcayman.
It seems stupid that more techs don't frequent these forums when there is so much world-wide info available on them.

Great info. There seem to be a lot of simlar threads just appeared on this subject. Strange that this is a problem just started 6 months in.
Freestyle, I first had this problem in January (see the date of my first post), only one month into ownership. But since it was fixed the first time it has been fixed again a second time. It has since been perfect for the last 10K miles.

Colder weather = thicker oil...maybe exaserbating the problem in winter months
