The PSE can be fitted without the switch and often is because the wiring is a very time consuming operation and hence expensive at OPC rates.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

12 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Does anyone that has the switchable version ever turn it off (except for maybe early morning starts)?? Strikes me if it makes such a difference to the (relatively poor) standard noise you'd want to keep the switch to "nice rumble" all the time rather than "quiet thank you". Fair? cheers

POST 5Original post

I wish I'd fitted the 'button' years ago, little did I realise just how loud PSEs can be >104dB, so unswitched you won't be getting on the majority of trackdays in the UK.

POST 6Original post

The switch is important in my opinion. Its good to have a balance, quiet or loud, when YOU want. I know there are times I arrive back to the estate where I live at silly hours and driving into the underground carpark with the PSE on at those times is crazy and would be very selfish of me. There are other times I like to turn it off, sometimes in loud mode you look like a tw@t... PSE is the best mod you can do, do it right for the extra few hundred pounds it is certainly worth having the switch fitted.

POST 7Original post

Like Damian says - you need the switch for trackdays, but if you aren't tracking then I wouldn't bother with it personally.

POST 8Original post

Guys, I'm about to buy a 996 with sports exhaust, but there is no switch. Is this possible? If so, how could I get a switch fitted? Thanks

POST 9Original post

The PSE can be fitted without the switch and often is because the wiring is a very time consuming operation and hence expensive at OPC rates. It probably could be retro-fitted but that will depend on what they did with the mechanism when they installed the silencers.

POST 10Original post

Does that mean that the car didn't come from the factory with the sports exhaust fitted? Was it optional to have the sport exhaust without the switch or was it retrofitted?

POST 11Original post

If it came from the factory, I would imagine that the switch would have been fitted. Many people tend to fit a sports exhaust of some description because the basic sound of a 996 or 997 is just too tame for a sports car.

POST 12Original post

I'm pretty sure that the proper factory fitted job had the switch so that it could be factory fitted in different markets. The factory fitted job has a pesky auto-switching feature which shuts the exhaust up at between 30-50mph, even in noisy mode. This feature is easily disabled. A non Porsche exhaust will probably not have the switching facility as it involves valves in the silencers. Personally, I love the switching feature, mainly for 'stealth ops', novelty value, and also I note it gets an approving nod from pretty girls on horses as you waft by in whisper mode without spooking Dobbin.
