This is not a probability of success.

The quote I have right now is less in labor and more in parts (plus AC charge + a diagnosis fee to make sure that indeed I need to replace the dang evaporator).

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

3 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I need my A/C evaporator replaced and from my research on this forum and renntech the job looks too ambitious for me (so many plastic bits to break off!). I'm in San Jose, CA and am reaching out to local shops for quotes on the job. Any recommendations from this group are welcome. Thanks in advance!

POST 2Original post

Sorry I cannot help with a shop recommendation... as I am in Seattle area... But I had this done 4 years ago so I can share the cost. You will need to add inflation to that. Total replacement of the full Climate control box (can be sourced from several sites $607 OEM - to $900+ Porsche) including the Evaporator and plus the Heater Core / heat exchanger, lots of O ring gaskets - etc. = $2800. Now my Labor cost (2018 - 10 hours was $160 / hour) was $1600. So at least that gives you a base line to work with. The work was done by an long time trusted Indy that had lots of 996 experience. Has work fine ever since and ... no more Floating Foam bits.

Thanks for the followup! The details you sent are really helpful. The quote I have right now is less in labor and more in parts (plus AC charge + a diagnosis fee to make sure that indeed I need to replace the dang evaporator). So not terribly far off from your experience. Appreciate the baseline!
