With about 1500miles on my
cayman S
i detected a small oil leak --near the engine /tranny junction . turned out to be a bad seal -- the dealer had a new tranny flown in from Calif . factory wanted them to do a total replacement and send the original back ---no problem since. Has any one else seen this problem ?
This may or may not be an occurrence of the rear main seal (RMS) leaks that have shown up in the cars since the introduction of the water-cooled motors in
986
Boxsters in 1998 and the 996
911s
in 1999. It's quite a long saga, and you can find out more since it's been covered here extensively by doing a search on "RMS" or "rear main seal." It's a bit if a misnomer, since all these leaks are not necessarily the rear main seal. They used to replace the whole motor, if the crankshaft cradle was found to be too far off center, but now they have a seal replacement that is derived from the Cayenne main seal. This repair, from all appearances seems to work quite well, and they no longer need to replace the entire motor. Usually these show up at around 15-20K miles on the clock, so it actually might not be related to the RMS problems previously reported in the ealrier models. I have yet to hear about any truly documented cases in the 987 or 997 cars.

My 02 996 Coupe had the RMS and clutch replaced at 11,000 mile just before I bought it, had no more problems and traded it in with 41,000 miles. I was a little concerned as I had read some bad stories of people having the RMS go bad several times.

MadEric - My 1999 996 had a bout of RMS, it was fixed, and has been fine. I know the people who bought the car from the dealer after i traded it in on the turbo, and it now has 52k miles on it with no problems.
Btw, it was good to meet you in KC, Godfrey...

They replaced the transmission? What seal on the tranny went? If the transmission was replaced then it was not oil that was leaking but transmission fluid and it had nothing to do with the real main seal (RMS).
