The diagonal bars to indeed go crusty, I had mine shot blasted and powder coated once, then just replaced when they went crusty again a few years later.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

6 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

After a couple of other threads on here looking at cars that didn't quite work out (for the best I think!), I'm looking at a 2003 Targa at the moment ( https://carsonline.bonhams.com/en/l...96-targa/e4c31f16-f5e5-4b2c-995b-a282f8b39d0c ) I've seen the car in person and it looks fundamentally sound, but having just gone through the pictures online I've got a couple of questions regarding the underside. In the first pic, does this look like damage / any cause for concern (around the crack and possible subsequent treatment)? In the second pic, is this kind of surface normal / OE? Not quite sure what's going on here. And in the final pic, these cross members / subframes always seem to go crusty. Do people normally treat and repaint, or replace? (and if replace, how much should I budget?) Thank you in advance!

POST 2Original post

The first and second picture look like it’s has a scrape from below. The texture on the second picture doesn’t look OEM, so is probably had a repair. The diagonal bars to indeed go crusty, I had mine shot blasted and powder coated once, then just replaced when they went crusty again a few years later. I think they were something like £60 each from Porsche, but it was a few years ago.

POST 3Original post

First picture - start of corrosion in the joint, seems to be an increasingly common point for this, it's popped up a few times on the forum. From that angle it doesn't look too severe yet, but need to be dealt with sooner rather than later. Second picture - I think this looks factory, as it looks sprayed on, but not got my head under my car to compare. I'd be more concerned with the rust staining and what looks like a failed coating on the very top edge of the photo. Third picture. It's possible to blast and powdercoat these, but it'll probably turn up a hole in the process, so replacement is the more robust approach (and probably cheaper if you're paying someone to do it for you). At least one of the arches needs some paint (could be black spooge on the surface, photo not good enough) and the inner arch needs dealing with sooner rather than later to catch the surface rust. None of this should be a deal breaker depending on what you're after, but take into consideration for pricing etc.

POST 4Original post

Agreed on pic 2, I'm pretty sure that is the OEM coating (with some staining/rust starting to show through). I would also take a look at that jacking point. It doesn't look terrible but certainly needs a wire brush and coating asap.

POST 5Original post

and surface rust on suspension arms are not that much of an issue car needs some tlc as @DJLoDY said but rather than Bonhams, buy private you might be surprised at the bargains that are out there

Agreed on all counts - and yes these arches need some attention too! @911UK i agree re the private market - I’ve bought all my cars privately before. But I saw this car in the flesh and it was exactly the spec I wanted (Billy B4s, 17”s, cruise control, BOSE) and the targa roof actually works! So depending on what the auction chucks it out at it could be spot on. But of course some money to be spent on it - don’t think you’ll find one sub 25k that doesn’t need a bit spending on it!
