I think the one I removed had the metal facing the ABS center (which makes sense) but I want to double check before reinstalling because I never want to do this again (other than the other side).

I am in the process of replacing all of the wheel bearings on my car, which is a job that is really un-fun.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

3 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi All, I have searched - a lot. I am in the process of replacing all of the wheel bearings on my car, which is a job that is really un-fun. Anyway, I have the rear one out, and getting ready to reinstall. I cannot find any info in the direction that the wheel bearing should go in. The rear bearing has a rubber seal on one side, and mostly metal on the other side. I think the one I removed had the metal facing the ABS center (which makes sense) but I want to double check before reinstalling because I never want to do this again (other than the other side). I did find one video where the guy in the comments said it did not matter, and he reinstalled it the opposite of the way of the one that he took out, but who knows if he had issues after that. If anyone knows for sure, let me know. Thanks. It's a 99 C2.

POST 2Original post

My understanding is that on 996 it doesn't matter, because our 996 wheel speed sensors read a toothed wheel on the axle. 997 and up read the wheel speed from the bearings.

POST 3Original post

Kris, FWIW I put the rubber seal out on mine just because that's the way the originals were installed.
