Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Its worth a shot to pull it out and give the reflow a go before buying a new or used unit.
Leading evidence: 'Use unit' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Repair bill' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I've searched & read and read & searched, but I can't find WHERE the top controller module is located in the 996 Cab?
My 2000 Cab's top is intermittenly malfunctioning. After many searches & reading, the cab top issue appears to be a common problem in the 993s as well. The 993 RL fix has you remove the control module and re-flow the cold soldered connections on the back of the board which have cracked over time / vibration. The problem is the solder used is mostly TIN (not enough lead) and cracks over time, especially at the higher draw connector pins. I believe the 996 soft top non-opening / closing issues are a result of the same controller solder issues. The 993 control module is under the driver side dash/center console. I don't know where it is located in the 996.
Any directions, especially pictures, of the top controller module and it's location would be MOST APPRECIATED! If I can remove & re-flow the solder connections I'll let you know. This solution is a $0.00 repair bill. I don't trust any dealership to correctly diagnose the problem, much less fix it in a timely manner and at a reasonable cost. Typically, they want to replace parts until they stumble upon a possible solution and Wash, Rinse & Repeat if that doesn't work.
Experienced 996 owners may already aware this fault and repair, but I can't find it in the 996 threads.
Thanks in advance!
Joel
It is underneath the carpet where the top is stored in the down position. Sorry I don't have any pictures from when I have been in there but here is a link that shows how to install the remote top module that will show you how to get into this area and where the controller is. My controller went bad a few years ago and I was able to find a replacement online and it was pretty easy to do.

Thank you!! I read your final solution (after you tried all the possible fixes with negative results). Its worth a shot to pull it out and give the reflow a go before buying a new or used unit. The cracks appear like rings or half rings in the cold solder in the back of the board. The 993 thread has a lot of detailed & close up photos so its easy to see what was causing the problem. In the 928 world we have similar issues with the cruise control computer and bake it on low for 20 minutes to reflow all the soldered joints.
Thanks again!
