I have a 2005
Boxster
that is garage kept. On mornings when there outdoor temps have fallen below freezing, the instrument cluster is not fully functional, giving false warnings about brakes,, etc. at times totally off. Garage is about 54 F. However after warming up the cabin for like 5 mins, everything on the cluster is working just fine; one instrument coming on at a time, others flickering before all is on.. Even when the cluster is totally off, the car runs fine all the time. It is almost like there is a loose connection on the Instrument cluster that contraction due to the cold caused it to turn off. Never have this problem when over night temps are above freezing.
Appreciate any suggestions.
My guess is that it is something deeper in the electronics. Many of the specs on individual components (things like max speed a chip will run, resistance of a resistor, power consumed, etc) all change as a function of temperature. Complex electronics (like processors) also change with age due to something called BTI degradation which is why you are just seeing this for the first time this year. It is likely to get worse over time (will not work at even higher temps than now). It is probably only one component but unfortunately I can't help you with which one. The touch screen on my Kia has a similar problem. Just started this year. It refuses to come on around freezing. Depending on how cold it is, it can take anywhere from a couple of minutes to a 1/2 hr to start working (like this morning when it was -24F). Kind of annoying as I use the back-up camera getting out of the driveway in the morning and when the touch screen doesn't fire up, the camera is useless. Sorry if this was a little "content free" but I think you are going to need to extend your debug beyond connectors. Let us know what you find.
Hi, long shot here but did you resolve this? I have exactly the same on my 2005 997!
It's quite unlikely you'll receive a reply from him. I'd suggest two things:
1 - Introduce yourself in the
New Member Introductions
forum section
2 - Make a new post describing the issue in this section of the forum. Include details, such as troubleshooting you might have tried, etc. We do have a 997/911 section, but there is much more activity here in the mid-engine sections. And the 997 and 987 shared much of the electronics such as instrument cluster components.
How did I know you won't get a response? A few clues about Mikeling2 - he only came to this forum once. He posted the message above and never visited again. He is no longer registered on the forum. How do I know those things (besides being an administrator) - if you float your cursor over his avatar (the picture associated with him - in this case just a big M) a window will popup - showing when he joined, how many posts he's made and when the last time he visited. In his case, he visited once, left his question and never revisited at least using that name.
In those sorts of cases - It's almost always more productive to start a new thread..
Good luck, and welcome to Planet-9, the Friendly Porsche Forum!
Don, I don't see "last time visited" when I float the cursor over the avatar of members. I see when they joined and how many posts they have made, replies,
points
, etc but last visit date isn't shown. Just wanted you to know since I've seen you post that tip a few times before.
Interesting - I wonder if it's an admin/mod thing only, or if now that you have enough posts to post in Classifieds and start convos with people if it will appear for you now (I see the post above was #11 for you.. 10 is the magic enabling number for several things like that.) Thanks for letting me know. I'll have to open my average Smoo account and see what I see..
