Hi all, I have a 2011 base
cayman
with the 2.9L engine and manual 6 speed transmission. The car has roughly 86k miles on it. Recently when leaving the car running and walking around the rear end, I noticed a faint knocking/tapping noise that sounded somewhat metallic. I have since tried troubleshooting the noise and it only seems to appear when the car is warm and I can only notice it at idle. It is not audible in the cabin, only when standing behind the car.
The video linked below demonstrates the noise, although it is still somewhat hard to hear. At 20-30 seconds in the video is probably where it is most prevalent. It sounds like a rhythmic tapping coming from the exhaust or engine.
From what I have found, it seems like this could maybe be something as simple as a bad cat or something else exhaust related, or (hopefully not) something like piston slap/engine knock. It is odd that it only does it when warm. I also wonder if there could be something with the clutch/flywheel that is rattling as those are both original. I don’t notice any difference if I depress the clutch pedal.

I don't hear anything concerning, there's 24 valves working for you there, some noise is normal. A loose plug can make a rhythmic tick but I don't even really hear that. If she's running right, not consuming more oil than stated normal in the manual or overheating go enjoy it. Don't be the "too" obsessed garage.
haha yes I’m probably just being overly worried. I haven’t heard of major engine issues with these cars so that is reassuring. Was prepping for an upcoming track day and noticed this so just wanted to get ahead of it if it was anything concerning.
That’s a normal noise, it should go away after you run it some . What oil?? Makes a big difference. That tick noise could also be injectors… sea foam in the tank could help maybe
