The day before yesterday, my car died when leaving a shopping center, the entire dash lost power and I was not able to remove the key, got it towed back home and managed to open the hood by powering the cigarette lighter, but the
battery
got checked and it is in good working order.
When you remove and connect again the
battery
terminal, all power gets restored but as soon as you try to turn On the engine, all you hear is a click on the starter and the dash loose its power again (no power anywhere) and cannot remove the key, unless you remove the
battery
cable.
It seems that I have a faulty ignition switch, how difficult would be to replace it?
Any tips will be greatly appreciated, thank you.
That sounds like a loose
battery
wire. If the cables have been loosened and not properly tightened including the one to the starter, it can vibrate off and then the "hot" wire can short out and kill the starter! There's also a joining terminal at the front of the engine, easily accessed while you have the top engine cover off checking the starter wires.
Thank you for the suggestions, the switch will arrive tomorrow and I will be checking the cable that powers the starter as well.
Hopefully it won't be something more sinister (and pricey..)
Regards,
Gilles
I forgot to ask how to remove the locking mechanism from the old switch to transfer it
to the new switch so I can still use the original key.
Thank you in advance!
a friend on the 986Forum (Boxter) mentioned that the Relay # 17 located on the rear trunk could be preventing the starter not to engage.
Could this relay box located on the same area of the engine
ECU
(behind the carpet by the rear firewall?)
Thank you!
On the
987.1
Cayman
's there's a relay panel under the carpeting on the left side of the trunk area. Not much but the
ECU
in the area in which its mounted IIRC. Don't know if this carries over to the
Boxster
or not.
When I had a similar problem, it was the master connector for the dashboard that had partially disconnected. Apparently, according to the tech, a not uncommon problem.
Hello rrosen,
I tried everything else without any success, by any chance do you know the general location for the master connector on the dashboard?
Thank you in advance!
Regards, Gilles
PS: The connector at the end of the
battery
positive cable is 'round and have a radial internal wiring..' it is difficult to explain but once you disconnect it from the power distribution box, you should first ckean it with an old tooth brush and using a mix of water and baking soda, thereafter you can use the electric cleaner and lastly the dielectric grease..
