Most of my "maintenance" in almost 2 years of ownership was strictly preemptive/car-guy/because I can/should, but the reality is this car would be running just fine if I hadn't touched it.

Also run a spreadsheet on every service item ever done as well as a forward looking service list to do going forward.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

16 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Most of us probably have a mental list and/or folder full of receipts, but I'm curious what others have come up with for tracking what they know about the history of their car, what/when/why they've done to it, how much they've got into it, etc. I threw together a quick google sheet for mine a few months back wherein I included all of the carfax history I could find as well as what the previous owner had told me. I delineated when I took ownership and what's been done to it since (by whom (indie vs me) and why). It tracks my costs at a maintenance and "mod" level as well. Just curious of your thoughts on this and/or if anyone else has better solutions. (redacted the locations and VIN because ....hashtag internet)

POST 2Original post

Randy, I am pretty much in synch with you. Have my folder of every service record since I bought the car in 2002. Also run a spreadsheet on every service item ever done as well as a forward looking service list to do going forward. Items to do are based on Porsche's service recommendations as well as items and parts that I want to upgrade and enhance. No question that you gotta service the car to keep it running in top form. Part of the trick is to do everything you can to contain costs by grouping things together that overlap. As an example, spark plugs, coils and fuel injectors. but if you are smart with managing your service, you can spread costs over the years while making sure you don't forget to do anything. Good luck with it. The car is worth it.

POST 3Original post

I have a Note with a list of repairs, maintenance, and mods on the iCloud. I keep a spreadsheet of my spare parts. I have the date & mileage marked on my oil filter, along with a torque line. I also have this list just to be certain: (I just realized the brake fluid change is missing)

POST 4Original post

I just go back into my FCP Euro account and look at all of the orders. Super easy. Although it can be a scary place to go, because I also firmly believe the "never add it all up" theory of track car ownership.

POST 5Original post

My spreadsheet looks likes yours minus the oil specifics - I just add that into the notes. I also don't sum the total cost of ownership. Smiles per mile - can't put a price on that. I think I saw in a for sale listing on RL someone had a spreadsheet where the rows were grouped by part type rather than services performed on a specific date. For example, brake pads, oil, air filter, etc. were each a line item. Then they were color coded so as mileage was updated they would turn green-yellow-red. If I find it again I'll come back here and post a link.

haha track car is another beast. Confirmed "do not ever add it up". Enjoy!

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thats awesome. Love the label printer idea. When we're all doing our own work, you lose the little things like the "oil sticker" in the corner reminder. I don't want to hijack my own thread @TexSquirrel but, seafoam....worth the trouble? in the fuel only or do you do vacuum line as well? Flamesuit on

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Good thoughts. I've tried to do the same. Most of my "maintenance" in almost 2 years of ownership was strictly preemptive/car-guy/because I can/should, but the reality is this car would be running just fine if I hadn't touched it. In either case, 3k of maintenance relative to the joy I've had of owning it for 2 years. Very fair trade. Very fair

POST 9Original post

Seafoam is definitely worth it. Fuel system only.

POST 10Original post

Tex, I like the idea of keeping a list of spare parts. Something I am not doing. I have more things lying around that I have forgotten about than I should.

POST 11Original post

Life is too short, i like to fix what is broke and foget about what it cost.

POST 13Original post

Tex, did you put on a different front bumper for your center radiator?

POST 14Original post

No, but I did have to trim the black plastic that resides behind the bumper. Mine is the 996.2 Aerokit front bumper.

are you talking about eliminating the shroud?

If you mean the plastic that covers the center hole on manual C2, then yes. It requires cutting, but is easy to do with a Dremel tool.
