I already diconnected both rods on each side and even then am I not able to fold the top into the compartment.
I bought the car with the lid open and the top in closed position.
Any ideas what the problem is?
Hi Blackbear... welcome to Planet-9, the friendly
Porsche
forum. You posted this in a general chat section, it's not going to get the views that it should so I'm going to move it to a tech area.
Questions for you:
Year of the

? (The mechanism changes a bit through the years..)
When you say "I bought the car with the lid open and the top in closed position " I'm not exactly understanding this.
When you bought the car - the lid was open, and the top was fully closed - up against the windshield header?
Can you now open the lid by hand? In fact - looking at the photos, I don't see the lid. Have you removed it? Or is it trapped in the top?
Does the top move - can you pull it forward so it touches the windshield header?
There are two sets of linkages you have to disconnect in order to use it as a manual top. The first is the links to the lid assembly. They are spring sort of things that actually use the springs to pull the lid down flush with the body. They also push the lid open when the top is going up or down. Have you disconnected these? (PN 11 in the diagram below).
Then there are two links (PN 9 below) that go forward from the bell crank (PN 8 below) on the top transmissions on each side - and these move the actual front section of the convertible top frame, forward or backward.
See PN 9 in the diagram above. They have to be disconnected. At that point, you have a manual operation top. If you have the owner's manual this is also described in it, and it tells what tools to use to make it a bit easier to disconnect the parts.

I'm still puzzled about the lid. I can't see it in your photograph. It appears the top may have been folded down on it, and it's never going to work that way. If that's the case, move the leading edge of the top forward to the windshield, open the lid, then fold the top into the compartment and close the lid.
OK - moving this now - hang on..

The clamshell was open, bent, and uneven with the top locked into the windshield header when I bought the car. I took it off and straightened it. The transmissions were removed and the top was operated manually by hand. The top, even disconnected fromt he transmissions entirely, does not go down far enough so that the clamshell could cover it if installed, as seen in my picture.
I bought two used transmissions including parts #8, #9, and #11. The top moves as designed but only as fas as you can see in my picture. Just as it did with the transmissions removed and operated manually. Right now the clamshell is installed and closed with the top locked to the windshield frame.

So it sounds as if there was some serious damage already done to the top mechanism before you purchased the car. The entire top assembly (bows, pivot, top) can be unbolted and lifted out of the vehicle. Somewhere here we have info on how to do that. I think that's the
next
step - take it out and find out what's bent or stuck keeping it from fully folding. I can't imagine what it might be - but I think it may be fairly obvious once the top is out of the car.
And nice looking

from what can be seen in your photo. Perhaps include that in your new user introduction posting - we're not just 987/
