Anyone have any idea what this is?

Its whistling because it doesn't know the words. But seriously, if its only for the first 90 seconds or so when you start the car cold in the morning, its most likely the aux air pump. The bearings wear and make a whisteling noise or a noise like the tiniest buzz saw.
It's not during startup and it's not always there. It comes and goes.
Doesn't go with the fans, tested with AC on and off.

I had a whistling noise like yours but only at idle when the revs were low.
Was most noticeable after driving the car hard for a while and then it would appear at idle. Increase the revs by 200 revs and it would go away.
Diagnosed and corrected by the dealer as an Oil Separator failure.
Ok. I'll look into that. What's an oil separator though?

Last time I heard a whistling noise it was the fuel pump going out. If not that your probably channeling Casablanca.
Do you have a picture of the oil separator?
Thanks.

Sounds like AOS. Just got mine replaced last month. Does yours come on when warm? Mine didn't when it was cold.
Mine only whistled at low revs at idle. When cold the revs were higher.
It was only after a drive when the car was fully warmed up and sitting at idle.
3 AOS failures in 11 years & all sounded just like yours.
I guess that's what's wrong on my gf's
cayman
then.
The noise has gone away for a month. We'll replace it when the noise comes back.
Thanks all!

Hey man, so what was the problem? I have this whisteling noice when car get's warmer. It gets louder by a level when engine is warmer.
I think if you take the time to read the thread - it seems most people - the issue is a failing AOS (Air-Oil-Seperator), ie PVC system device. The part isn't expensive and it's certainly a DIY item (we have a number of threads on it), but it does take some time to replace it and probably some busted knuckles.. if that's something you enjoy doing- then have at it and let us know how it worked out for you...
