I used two gear type box wrenches. It worked okay even though they were the el-cheapo version.
Outcome qualification: Negation, uncertainty or missing explicit repair resolution overrides the raw extraction signal.

If yours has never been changed, you WILL fill a remarkable difference by replacing it, comparable to new motor mounts.

Actually two would be swell, since you need to tighten 2 bolts evenly, so if you have two wrenches you don't have to switch back and forth.

Using this tool you can replace it with nothing other than basic hand tools, rather than having to remove the transmission from the car and use a shop press.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

If you are thinking about doing this job, stop thinking and just do it. It's very easy, the mount only costs ~$60-70 and makes a huge difference in the driving of the car. Idle quality, shift quality, and overall road vibration. The newest of the 996s is now 12-13 years old; a rubber bushing holding up ~1/3 of the weight of the engine/transmission assembly and all the driveline loads associated cannot be expected to last that long. If yours has never been changed, you WILL fill a remarkable difference by replacing it, comparable to new motor mounts.
Using this tool you can replace it with nothing other than basic hand tools, rather than having to remove the transmission from the car and use a shop press.
Tips for making it easier:
1) A lift would help, but I did the job just fine on ordinary jackstands. With a lift it would just be easier to get leverage on things and see clearly whether everything is nicely lined up.
2) A long-handled 13mm ratcheting wrench. Actually two would be swell, since you need to tighten 2 bolts evenly, so if you have two wrenches you don't have to switch back and forth. Again, I did this with one ~6" 13mm ratcheting wrench, it's not that hard, it just takes longer.
3) The special AGA mount with the machined edge is not necessary. Just buy a Lemforder mount from wherever you can get it the cheapest; it already has a slight chamfer on the ends of it that help it get started in the hole.
4) At least on my car, the mount went in better coming from the passenger side, not the driver's side as the instructions suggest. On my car, the passenger side had a slight chamfer on the casting that helped align the mount on the way in, while the driver's side had a machined recess that the AGA tool fit into properly. Going the opposite direction things would have been considerably harder to line up. Your scenario may differ; perhaps not all transmission housings have exactly the same machined features.
Just another note on this topic, if you are experiencing trouble getting your tires to balance and you have vibration at highway speed, it may not be your tires at all; this transmission mount can be the culprit.
I have brand new Michelin tires on my car, balanced by a reputable shop in town, but I still had steering wheel vibration at ~75 mph. I was ticked at the shop, thinking they did a lousy balance, but after thinking about it more, feeling the vibration come and go under different load and road conditions, and also feeling a lot of slop on/off throttle, I started to think it probably wasn't a tire problem.
After replacing this mount, it's gone.
Again, if you're debating doing this job, just do it. You'll be happy you did, and your car will drive better.
Can't seem to send you a PM, perhaps since you're a new member with few posts...even though your join date is 2004? Confusing. Anyway, send me a message and we'll connect.

Big thanks to dkraige for renting me the AGA tool, it worked great. Without a doubt my transmission mount was shot, it had a 97 date of manufacture! With a new OEM transmission mount and RSS motor mounts the car is now transformed. Awesome seat of your pants feel on the S turns.
Just rented the AGA tool from dkrainge (Dave.) Everything done thru email and paypal and USPS. Everything from Dave's price, timeliness, shipping, etc. is great. I did my mount in less than an hour in my garage with the car on jack stands and a floor jack to support the transmission.
Dave, I'm sure you'll see this, thanks again.
Steve-
I've added a note to my waiting list. Looks like there is likely to be an opening at that time which would work out. Just sent me an email or PM when you are ready.
Just bumping this back to the top as a reminder since there were a number of people who were interested in renting the tool after the holiday season settled down.
Yep, that's normal. The mount is not completely filled in. Some folks have filled those voids with various substances to increase the stiffness of the mount. Up to you whether you want to make that tradeoff of direct feedback vs. harshness.
Rented the tool from Dave and did my mount yesterday .It is not a big job and made a significant improvement in clutch engagement and shifting .
Dave was a pleasure to work with and extremely reasonable on his rental fee .
Thanks for the kind words. There's been a bit of an explosion lately of people interested in renting the tool. For those of you who have emailed or PM'd me, I've added you to the list and gotten back to you with a rough timeline estimate. When your number comes up and I email you please respond promptly; If I don't hear from you in a day or so, I'm moving on to the next person down the list so we don't keep people waiting! Dufresne, party of 2?

Bumping this back up. I've contacted all the people who have gotten in touch with me recently, and either successfully rented them the tool, or gotten no response. Anybody interested, please feel free to contact me! The wait time should be very short as of now
Hi, I bought the mount and Im interested in renting the tool, but for some reason cant find the button to send PM messages. Can you PM me and Ill reply? Thanks!
Meh, probably a wash. When you consider all time spent packing and shipping it over and over, time spent on the phone and internet sourcing new parts after people damage it, etc., I basically have a beat-up version of the tool sitting in my garage that I paid roughly $0 for. Better than a brand-new version for $300 IMO, but certainly not a golden investment opportunity
Ha! No, not as far as investments go but not bad for a rather expensive specialty tool. I havent even used mine yet, and Ive sent it out three times and have a fourth person waiting...Hoping to get my new trans mount in soon
Does anyone have the part number for the transmission mount? I went through the online parts book but that mount isn't listed (as least I couldn't find it)
@dporto
Let me know availability on the tool. I've pulled the engine and tranny already as part of the engine replacement.
Besides the transmission mount, any other bushings I should replace as part of this engine swap?

- I recommend this one if you're DIY'ing it. It's a standard Lemfoerder mount but they machine a bevel on one side to make installation easier.
If you want to rent the tool please PM me. There are two others ahead of you at the moment. Thanks for inquiring
I hope you didn't buy the mount yet - Yes there is a difference between the two transmissions. Also - The tool is a little different for the Tiptronic mount. I don't have the parts for the tip mount so sorry, the tool won't work for you
Hi, I was hoping to rent the tool next, I have everything apart and realized I will need the tool. I'm new on this forum and can't really find a way to PM. Can you PM me or text me at 2532546021 hoping to get it asap . Thank you

I'm literally on my way out of town tomorrow, and won't be back 'til 11/6. If you still need it when I get back I'll be glad to rent it to you. Hopefully by then you'll be able to PM me.
Oh no I'm always a little late... Thank you for your response but I think by that time I will try to find another one if not I will contact you. Thank you.
I just did this job over the weekend. Rented from Dporto (Thank you!). The tool is going back to him today.
Mine is a 2002 and just hit 100k miles today. If you haven't swap out the transmission mount... you probably should, mine has collapsed and replacing it really transform the entire handling and driving experience!
Old trans mount is pretty much sitting on top and the rubber pieces on both sides are missing?!
Old one out of the car and you can see the rubber has deformed.
BTW! Strongly recommend getting very deep 13mm socket and 2 of them.
Mine wasn't long enough and on install, I had to use 1 wrench and that made the install process much longer and tedious.
Is your tool available to rent?
Sorry I'm new here and can't PM.
My transmission is out. I'm halfway through an IMS, clutch, flywheel, etc. replacements. I then noticed the condition of the mount, so I'll need to replace that too...
Now I just need the tool!
Thank you.
It's currently still out, but on it's way back to me. Once I get it back I could turn it around to you if you agree to my terms. email me at **[email removed]** (remove asterisks) and I'll give you the details. Thx
I would like to rent the AGA tool for my manual 2005 997. I have transmission slack and believe it may be the rubber mount. The runner looks ok to me but Im betting on it needing replacement after 14 yrs and 130k miles in the Houston heat!
can you let me know the terms and cost. I would Ge to the job immediately on arrival so can turn it around fast.
Thank you
Guy
