Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Last fall when it started to cool down it didn't seem normal, so I checked the sensor and found it wasn't in its holder.
Leading evidence: 'Check sensor and found it wasn't in its holder' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check sensor and found it wasn't in its holder' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Once back in place the fan rarely ran after shutting the car off.

The WD-40 is to lubricate the sensor popping into the grommet.

I realized that my engine fan has always seem to run for an excessive amount of time.

Easier to illustrate where it goes using a pic of the engine removed from the car.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi,
Long time lurker, but finally bought a 991 c2 cabriolet!
I was cleaning the engine bay today (quarantine is boring the heck out of me) and noticed this loose sensor.
It looks to be a temp sensor. Anyone know where it goes, and what the temp data is used for?
Thanks!
993.110.530.00 - this seems to be the grommet part number?
Only 2 wires
Passenger side of the engine bay near the base of the intake manifold.
It goes right there, sensor pointed down, connector up, in a notch in between the runners of the intake manifold.
It is a temperature sensor, and it is a part of the engine lid fan control circuit.
Lol, thats funny for us who know these cars in and out. But good info for owners, as plenty of folks dont know, since there are many items that DO require pulling the engine.
For anyone installing this in the future, it is MUCH easier if you REMOVE the grommet from sensor, apply WD-40 to the INSIDE of the grommet, install grommet, then pop in the sensor. The WD-40 is to lubricate the sensor popping into the grommet. It’s a tight fit so just push down hard and POP, it goes in.
Now a CEL turned on after putting this loose sensor back in place.. likely coincidence but will have to see..
I found the grommet in my engine bay, but I can not find the engine temperature sensor.
where does the temp sensor originate from? I am trying to trace the route to find it.
OK now that everyone sees where the sensor goes now you know how to access the rear bolt on the AC comprsoor which is located directly below this sensor which must be removed to remove the bolt. Just sayin for the future😜
I found the sensor. I realized that my engine fan has always seem to run for an excessive amount of time. It can run for up to an hour after I park. I am now thinking that it is because the sensor was in the wrong place, touching something hot.
This must be somewhat common. Mine was doing the same thing last year. Last fall when it started to cool down it didn't seem normal, so I checked the sensor and found it wasn't in its holder. Once back in place the fan rarely ran after shutting the car off.
