Is this a case of removing the alarm control unit under the seat, opening it, drying it out, cleaning it up, and reinstalling it - or am I TOAST and need to replace the unit?

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Sequence of Events: Stopped to get gas yesterday - got back in the car and it would not crank - all dash lights came on but when the key turned over no cranking action at all Waited awhile while crapping my pants - jiggled the key, inserted and removed, got out of the car - locked the doors with the fob - unlocked with the fob After about five minutes the car started with no issues Drove home - about a five minute drive - turn off car - remove key from ignition - reinserted the key and it would not crank - damn Left the car unattended for about 15-20 minutes - returned to the car - car immediately started with no issues - let it idle for a few minutes - turned it off and it started right up again Locked the car with the fob and got the "double beep" - damn Next morning car started immediately - drove it until the car reached operating temperature and returned home - turned car off - removed key - reinserted key and it started immediately Waited an hour - did the same thing two more times during the course of the day - car started immediately So my initial GUESS of a hot start issue doesn't seem to be the case because of what happened next and in the last two years the following has been replaced: Y cable Complete ignition switch Headlight switch Clutch switch Starter Alternator Take her on a test run today - reached operating temperature - four way flashers came on but a kinda erratic flash - while driving I attempted to turn them off but they would not go off I get home - turn off the car - four way flashers were now able to be turned off - car immediately started up Got out of the car attempted to lock the car with the fob car would not lock - got my second fob - still would not lock 15 minutes later - car locked with the both fobs - no double beeps after the first event 2003 996 Cabriolet 6 speed Oh "wise ones" what direction should I be looking? POST 2Original post

The alarm control unit (under drivers seat) is a plausible common denominator for all the undesirable events you have experienced. Remove the alarm control unit and open it up and inspect for evidence of water/moisture intrusion.

Darn you are good!!!!! First time being able to check the car today - touched the driver side carpet - squish, squish, squish with water. I have some obvious water intrusion issues with my Cab (I cleaned the vents maybe about six months ago as preventative maintenance) - I need to resolve that issue. Is this a case of removing the alarm control unit under the seat, opening it, drying it out, cleaning it up, and reinstalling it - or am I TOAST and need to replace the unit? 911STYL Ron

You could pull it and sink it in a canister of dry rice for awhile. There are some many drains that have to be checked on a cab for water intrusion. ECU Doctors makes a waterproof container for just this purpose. Wise investment for a cab owner. https://www.ecudoctors.com/products/...m-clu-computer

UPDATE: Total cost at Porsche dealership $4741 Carpet and mat cleaned and dried Clogged front body drain was the culprit Two key heads provided Alarm control unit replaced Driver seat belt buckle and harness replaced Said I needed new windshield wipers - cost $75 - I opted out on this one All covered by insurance I didn't even consider insurance as option but I read a similar post here on the forum and I said what the hell, very, very pleasantly surprised.
