Just seen a 911 that is £10k cheaper (ish) in guards red, I tend to keep cars 18 months so expect it to be expensive but £10k is a lot in that time frame, will I lose most/some on resale. I get the "buy what you want" and if I was buying new absolutely, but is this a reasonable compromise for a substantial saving

Colours are all personal.
Guards Red is a classic colour and really suits the (earlier) cars, but may be a bit too strong for some tastes on the bigger contemporary models.
Carmine Red may work better on newer Porsches.
I really like that.
If you buy into the argument that entry level 911 is the best 911, then that colour and spec seems a logical extension.
Short term, it might be an unpopular colour choice but, like white, I think the 1980s colours are due a bit of a revival.
I don't know about resale value, but it's not a common sight on the roads any more.
The large majority of 991/992 models are anything other than guards red

Grey, grey, grey or black. Same with Astons
Hugely helpful, just watched a video of the car doing a drag race against a cybertruck that's not going to help resale !!!! Agree they do seem to be more popular on older models, I have the same feeling about a lugano blue, it's a bit bright for me (although I did have a seneca blue Emira). This is the one that matches the "he works in accounting" view of me.... and the same as my Cayman GTS 981 I had which I liked.

A friend of mine aspires to own every model of Porsche sports cars in guards red. He currently has: 964, 944, 924, mk1 boxster, 928. Quite a few to go but a potential buyer come resale time
Edited by blueg33 on Monday 28th July 15:29
I guess it's only £10k off if you get it back on resale, if its £100k now and sell for £80K, compared to one at £110k that I sell for £90k (ignoring cost of capital) then its not a saving (obvs). So just wondering what will be the difference in 18 months time when only real variable is colour. Is it a £5k gap ?

6 months ago you could have bought an albeit pre registered new 992.1 base or T for that money , so with that in mind and apart from being a press car i think its expensive no matter what the colour with that mileage
I like red and had a guards red Porsche a good few years ago but for some reason that example above doesn’t do it for me. It could just be the photos that are a bit dull, maybe better in reality and most likely much better with a bit of sun. By the way, whoever bought my car wrapped it in some dull colour so didn’t share my view. It’s a funny ol’ world.
If you’re into the colour, a £10k discount sounds nice tbh. Who knows what the future holds. Not sure I would worry that much about it.
Ha! I’ve been looking at that exact car pondering the same!
I’ll be honest, I wouldn’t be totally dead set against an ex Press Car. My MacanS was one of the Press Fleet and there were videos of Mat Watson and others driving it around. But aside from a transfer box (which was par for the course with early Macan’s anyway), it never put a foot wrong and was auctioned through here recently looking and allegedly driving superbly still.
For me, I’m almost into a 992.1 C2S but wouldn’t disregard a Guards Red with the right spec.
Youforreal. said:
If it s already took the hit for being red why would you take another one on resale?
It will just be deprecation.
By comparison a new one is £140K (though seems a lot)
https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202506103...
then at 5K miles (the original posted link) equates to £40K (£8 per mile) loss.
Is it me or is the depreciation on this model off the charts.
Looks superb in guards. I bet if you called the OPC up saying you’d be prepared to put a deposit on the car today they’d knock another 10% off. Ever since launch of 992 I’ve thought the standard Carrera and S, 4S the best looking in the range having liked the turbo models of previous water cooled models. In a few years colours that aren’t in vogue now always come back. I remember white 993 or 996 were not popular at all. You’d be paying a premium today (if you can find one).
Think what's interesting is there is a bit of a divide (as with all colours) but it's not especially polarising, so there are many GR lovers which suggests there is a strong enough resale market. Also one at £107k has just sold, newer and just a few miles so GR does sell.
To be honest there are quite a few Guards red ones about so even right now i might prefer Carmine red , guards in no way should be a cheaper car colour is just preferance. For me i like the 992 in the brighter colours Shark, Lugano, Ruby ,Green.
Guards is a classic colour and still looks good.
I'm still trying to get my head around that Guards is no longer a standard colour, £1700ish on the configurator - remember the days when black, white, red & yellow were standard, bit more for metallic, then more than a bit more for PTS, like all things car, and especially Porsche, the paint option prices are just silly....
cayman-black said:

Preferences are thoroughly relevant to market value. If not many people prefer Guards, the market value of the car will be lower. Or not. It all depends on preferences!

With Neodymen Gold alloys....

I love a red 911 in any generation, but would agree the older cars tend to suit it better. In this case, there are a TON of 992.2 Carreras kicking about in dealers (quite a few GTSs, too) so values have taken a hit. Obviously this one is a press car, but that's one hell of a lot of car there.
I'm constantly waiting on that unicorn Carmine red manual car... (to replace my 991.2 PDK, also in Carmine
)

I think the perfect spec of 911 for me would be
Guards red
Light interior
Panoramic sunroof
Silver wheels
Bose
Matrix LEDs
Base carerra or maybe a 4.
I like the one you’ve posted but black interiors are a bit dull

No idea if it s symptomatic of guards in general or not but my GR 992T was a total nightmare to sell despite it being a good spec/miles/price etc .
I think they are not particularly photogenic and they have a bit of a stigma, midlife crisis red and all that. A bit like drug dealer black I suppose.

I conquer, it wouldn't suit a Cayman, that's for sure.
I disagree. Guards is lovely on the GT4 and GT3 cars.

I’m on my 2nd guards red 911 so might be biased but I love it, my previous 991 sold within a few hours of being advertised so there is a market.

Ah, I wasn’t sure as I did spot the username you’re replying too.
For me, guards is one of my hit list colours when browsing. The 718 looks lovely in it.

Surely thats Guards Red? I had one the same back in 1989. OP seems Guards is still a great choice.
Now
thats what the previous owner though but the paint code disagrees and a Porsche touchup pen of guards red is too dark.

I did not think Carmen was out back then, also thought that Carmen is a darker shade than Guards?
With all the posts above it just show how great Guards is, great photos chaps.
I agree, guards is a classic colour.

Not a huge fan of the wheel colour, would prefer the silver wheels, which is easily fixed.

Porsche Carmine Red is an old colour, it may have been re-formulated for the 981 models, but it's been available since the 80's and possibly earlier.

There were 7 different Guards Red paint codes so no doubt slight variances. Apparently you could also get Carmine in 87 and 88 but it is a darker shade.
Always difficult to tell from a photo.
Love Guards Red - but does oxidise quite easily - one to keep out of direct sunlight indefinitely. My GR 2001 Boxster looked a bit pink after a few years....

That is certainly a concern. I assume PPF would reduce the impact?

I've observed it's a common issue on VAG cars, loads of Golfs/Polos seem to suffer the same fate.

Any excuse to post another gurards red car.
I think it looks great on all era of 911s, Boxsters, Caymans. If anyone has been to a few Porsche meets, and them you see how many silver, grey and black cars there are, it always makes a change seeing brighter cars.
I was looking for a black 996 but also didn't mind a red or yellow one. Happy woth my choice.
Get the 992 bought.
I'm looking for a 991 at the mo, and Carmine is first choice, but guards is right up there.
4 came onto the market last week and 3 of them sold already.
One trader put the price up from £38950 to £41950 and it still sold before the weekend even arrived.
This one is still for sale, I think with the grey wheels it looks really nice....
I think many ignore some of the nicer colours because they are worried about resale, but in a world of boring monotone colours (my 911 is grey before anyone gets offended.) when a proper 'colour' turns up they tend to get snapped up.
Guards is hard to photograph, ends up looking more orangey red but it isn't in the flesh, it has more blue than orange in it, not as much as Carmine, but still nice.
Auto100 always get the colour of guards red when they take pics of their cars for sale.

I’m thinking the same, there is also one at Lakeside Classics I think looks good.
Then again there is the GR 997 GTS for sub £50K that’s very tempting

My GT3 Touring order is Silver, but after seeing your car I may change to GR!!!!
When I bought my used 718 four years ago, I really wanted Guards red but I never found one that had all the other options I wanted and got impatient and bought a GT Silver one instead.
I like silver cars, but I do still regret not waiting another 3 months.
Well, if it helps, Guards Red now costs the same as Gentian Blue and Carmine Red, at £1,704 extra, more than Jet Black Metallic, GT Silver and Ice Grey Metallic, all IMHO premium colours. Porsche obviously regard it as worth the money. It would also be at the top of my list, mind you the second place would be White.
I saw a YouTube pundit the other day saying don't buy Black or White, there's something wrong with the paint. However, I would guess that he is just another lunatic.
Somehow the 992.2 has a very traditional feel about it, and that might suit the classic colours.
