Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Reported cause
My problem is forgetting that the blower hangs down from the lid.
Leading evidence: 'forgetting' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'forgetting' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check oil and having' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

They perfectly fitted my 996 front hood without modification

Finally broke down installed new struts and am surprised when I open each and they don't immediately try to clock me on the noggin once again!

I have just replaced mines with the Stabilus (80$ both) for the rear of my C4S.

Same goes for the frunk lid (also replaced those)!
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Thanks for the tip, this worked plus the trunk opens a bit more this way.
Just bought another replacement rear lid shock/strut for $67 from AutoAtlanta. I replaced it once before in 2013 with OEM Porsche. 7 years? Did the gas leak out? I was wondering how many other people have had to replace it and how often? Nothing like checking the oil and having that lid drop down on you! Same goes for the frunk lid (also replaced those)!
I bought mines at $18 Amazon

^^^ I'll let you know how the $14.99 ($16.xx with NYSST) "Boxi" brand works out as I just ordered one... These are basically throwaway parts and have nothing to do with the mechanicals or driving characteristics and/or safety of the car - I can buy three of them before I reach the cost of a "Porsche" part (which really isn't made by Porsche anyway)... I'll let you know how it goes
I've changed it once in ten years of ownership. My problem is forgetting that the blower hangs down from the lid. I can't tell you how many times I've cracked my head on that damn thing - either leaning in or getting up.
I have several knots on my cocoanut from my 996 trunk and my 986 frunk, took to driving around with hockey stick shafts cut to appropriate lengths to support the open trunk/frunk. Finally broke down installed new struts and am surprised when I open each and they don't immediately try to clock me on the noggin once again!
Actually my question was about how long the damn things last, not a debate about the cost or brand. Other cars have gas struts just like ours. I was surprised that I only got 7 years out a gas strut. Seems like they should last longer than that, especially since I don't open the engine lid very often. And yes, for long engine repair jobs, I prop the lid up with an adjustable pole for safety and peace of mind. If in the end Amazon $14 struts last much longer than 7 years, please report back. Thanks.
The weird thing is that I looked up my old receipt and it was on 5/3/15. The 7 year old replacement failed on me 5/23/20. Almost to the day! But, I'll be 70 in another seven years, and the car will be 28 years old, so maybe I'm done?
DB: I will let you know when my $20 Stabilus strut tries to kill me if I'm not trapped beneath the hood to forever! At this point of 6 years still working. Which reminds me next oil change I should get the prop-up stick ready...
Even cheaper repair, was working on the engine couple weeks ago and the rear lid started falling down, with no time to stop, I just took a tie wrap to the strut rod and works great.... the following week I fix the window regulator with a tie wrap also and works lowering while closing the door. LOL about 6 cents cost to repair
Was there any modification needed to make them fit ? The Amazon link says for Porsche 968... Just want to make sure before I order since I need them as well.
So I just received the struts, but they are clearly longer than the OE ones I had and don't seem to fit. I ordered the ones that were listed in this thread. Is there a secret to making them fit, like trying to compress them prior to installation ?
*Ouch* I paid $18.00 for Stabilus from RM European. Maybe the C4S is a different part number than for a C2?

there's thread over (somewhere) in the 997 section where an RL'r
took all three of the struts to Advance or AutoZone and they found direct replacements for around $8 per
and they worked just fine, identical fit
Well, ordered my new OE Porsche rear shock/strut from AutoAtlanta for mucho dollars...and guess what, after soaking in Goo-Gone all night to get all the stickers off, this is what I got. It does have a Porsche part number on it though. So, it's made by Stabilus after all....
