Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I was quite surprised when I checked the other side to see that that one must have vanished at some point in the recent past as well.
Leading evidence: 'Check other side' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'good idea' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check other side' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

So sounds like it's probably a good idea to replace rather than ignore.

Also if the problem is with the plastic hex nuts (seen below) then try the metal spring disc type (see further below):

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

For a few years now I've had a running battle with the side undertrays at the front of my C4. They work loose, I insert some new trim fasteners, and all is good for a while longer. Yesterday on a spirited drive through North Wales (absolutely glorious, by the way. Sun peeking through the clouds and snow on the tops. Fabulous) a cattle grid must have done for the last remaining fastener and from the scraping sound I knew it was dragging along the ground pretty much immediately. Sadly by the time I nursed the car to the nearest shop likely to sell something to help shore it up, it was too late and the undertray was gone. I was quite surprised when I checked the other side to see that that one must have vanished at some point in the recent past as well.
So my question is, with both side undertrays gone, were they actually doing anything useful/important? Or can I just ignore the fact that they're not there and not have to worry about checking them ever again?
No doubt Alex will be along with some wisdom given his car has covered nearly 200k. My view would be is that they are not a cosmetic feature, but there to protect the underside from road debris and may assist in parts lasting longer rather than corroding. There may also be a benefit with airflow, alas I am not an engineer nor Porsche officianado
+1 to what Karl said above, the side ones are mainly to protect from road crap.
The front and the rear are a bit more useful, as they channel air to cool engine, brakes etc and have aero benefits. I once forgot to refit the front undertray after doing some work, and the car was VERY sketchy at speed.
Alex has now come along to stick his two penneth in.........Karl has pretty much nailed it with what he's said. Which fasteners are the ones that are coming loose?
Yeah it's gone a bit further than fasteners!
So sounds like it's probably a good idea to replace rather than ignore. From a quick google and checking under the car, it looks like these might actually be part of the wheel arch liner. Can anybody confirm this? Replacing the whole liner would be a bit more hassle but possibly not a bad idea just on general principle.
Yes it's the full wheel liner. I replaced one of mine a couple of years ago after hitting a deer. Picked one up off Steve Strange at Douglas Valley Breakers for around £60 I think. I've never had any come undone though. I'd make sure all the fasteners are genuine Porsche ones. Also if the problem is with the plastic hex nuts (seen below) then try the metal spring disc type (see further below):
Right thanks all. Looks like I need a pair of these (2002 C4 Cab)

and probably the rubber lip & air ducts as well. I know what I'm doing this weekend
+1 with the breaker route, new plastics can be hideously expensive and breakers are your friends here. It is not as if it is a cosmetic item and you could save £££’s over new
