Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

With my sons help I replaced every suspension component on my now 91,000 997 for £2500 (which included a reciprocating saw off of eBay, for the eccentric bolts) As the other posters say, the floor is a worry and costs can spiral in an alarming way.
Leading evidence: 'Replace every suspension component' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace arb pins/bushes' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suggestion
These cars are not that cheap in parts and labour and the list of advisories could easily run into five figures to fix.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Before getting distracted by the C4S posted in another thread, I was looking for a cable throttle early 996.1. I’ve found one that’s exactly the spec I’d like, but it’s not been looked after very well (scraped through MOTs the last few years) and this is the longest list of advisories I’ve ever seen! Mileage is 106k for reference.
BUT in principle it’s just two main jobs:
- replace all brake lines
- replace ARB pins/bushes
Has anyone done these jobs recently to give me an indication of expected cost (at London labour rates!)
Thanks
PS - and yes, I know that there’s going to be a tonne of other work that needs doing to the car too. Oil leak might be RMS. All suspension bushes prob need doing. Am going to view tomorrow. Want to get it up on a jack and wheel off to look at coffin arms, top mounts etc etc
Brake lines has been done on mine but not by me. I paid for all correct replacement Porsche pipe parts and then fitting. There is one that goes over the gearbox which is a gearbox out job. Some people fab their own lines from copper or that other stuff - is it kunifer - and this can be manipulated over the box without removing. Most of these cars will need this doing at some point as they age. The standard pipes will rust away eventually. My 98 car was done around 6 years ago. My mate's 03 car was done 4 years ago.
Unless you get it for a bargain price, it might be better to walk away and find one that has already had the money spent on it, unless you are going to do the work yourself. These cars are not that cheap in parts and labour and the list of advisories could easily run into five figures to fix.
Agree that you're always better off buying at the top end of the market - the money you can sink into them you're not always going to get back. But it's difficult to find one in the spec I'm after, and at the right price it would make sense. The question is, what's the right price?! Car currently listed at 15k but my feeling is it has to be closer to 10k.
Wow! I am not being funny, but take a magnet as well. Unless the seller is almost giving it away, there is quite a bit of work. If you are hands on, quite a bit is dooable. No doubt you have, but put £2k more than the value of the seller is wanting for the car in search sites such as Piston Heads and Autotrader and see what comes up. Whatever you do, I wish you well
My current C4S was bought as a basket case car as a project which had to have all the brake lines replaced as well as all suspension and a shed load of other parts plus the engine rebuild took the total price of the car (purchase price + parts) over what a higher price example would have.
Apart from the current oil pressure problems, its been a nice project but I should have just bought a very good example for what I've spent on it.
The hole in the floor is very bad no doubt there will be other areas of rot once you start poking about, brake pipes not to bad i replaced the over the top gearbox one quite easy without removing the gearbox dont quite see what all the fuss is about concerning these pipes really. I'd leave well alone.
