Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

But are they a cow to fit as they do look that way, and OPC said they would need to reset all the dashboard lights, is this right?

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

9 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

2 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Well i have had the car 3 days and BAM won't start Battery dead as a dodo, so new battery on,(cheap option), still charging at 11 on the gauge, obviously not good. So my guess is the Alternator, which i have been quoted by OPC Sheffield £680 fitted WHAT! yes £680 Now the Alternator is around £200 (reasonable) But are they a cow to fit as they do look that way, and OPC said they would need to reset all the dashboard lights, is this right? I thought i might be able just to bolt the new alternator on and away i go Can anybody advise me on fitting of them and anything else i might need to know Thanks in advance

POST 2Original post

Ady, obvious question maybe but what about the battery? Mine wouldn't hold a charge (original 7 year old battery) and i changed it for a bosch silver and bought a CTEK trickle charger. The battery was so bad it wouldn't charge fully on a separate charger so that may be a consideration. If its not used routinely the battery will drain surprisingly quickly. And it takes quite a bit of juice to start them. Tim

POST 3Original post

If it is the alternator you are in for a real treat whilst driving. One by one you will lose things like PAS, ABS etc. Then the alarm will go off, all whilst you are driving the car to the dealer to get it fixed. How do I know, because this is exactly what happened to me. Battery knackered, charged it, mmmmm not holding much charge, best get it sorted, off to the dealer and before you know it my dashboard was lighting up like a Christmas tree  New alternator and battery in and away we go. Hope you get it sorted one way or another. Have you tried an indie. for the alternator?

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for the confirmation Your description is exactly the same as what happened to me yesterday, i only just got to the garage and it died on me! more lights than blackpool illuminations!!!! and how loud is the alarm when you are trying to put a new battery on? Got a guy on it on monday for £250 all in, so not as bad as 1st feared I'm just gutted that i haven't got the car on the 1st weekend i have owned it, suppose it'll save me the fuel money though

POST 5Original post

try a new battery in the 1st instance if it is dead, normally solves everything

POST 6Original post

Turn the ignition key to position 1 to avoid the alarm
Turn the ignition key to position 1 to avoid the alarm
i'll remember that! cheers i put a new battery on, still not charging at 14 on the gauge so deffo the alternator

POST 9Original post

If the battery is showing 14 on the gauge then that is where it should be afaik. I now keep mine topped up with an Oxford battery optimizer and have never seen the gauge go above 14v. Apologies if I have misunderstood your last post.
