Some very expensive exotica are often colour changed, in fact I am looking at a colour changed black F40.

The additional silencers fitted to the car to make it trackday useable, muted it to the point whereby it was only slightly noisier than a well used standard car.I normally dislike noisy cars, but the full-fat Manthey K400 exhaust kit makes the 996 GT3 into one of the best sounding 911's IMO.

Suggestion
To throw into the mix, I would have no hesitation of buying a colour changed car if it was fully documented and done to a high standard, especially by Porsche.

Otherwise you'd have dropped £75k or whatever and still not be happy - man maths as you say.

Nearly £100k...or put another way £20k more than a 3.8 Gen 2?
Is it just the colour that's commanding the premium?
Lovely, lovely car and possibly the most sought after colour. For my money, though, I'd have a Gen 2 and spend the rest on doing european trackdays in it.
IMI A said:
Yep rare colour hence the price. I think its more like £85k as no ceramics, Nice low mileage though.
I have to agree the colour is fantastic.

If it belongs to who I think it does, it's an absolute peach of a car and owned by a very well informed individual. He's already turned down some fairly heft offers for the car.
Would concur with Gen 2 RS ownership over this, but there aren't many Gen 2's about in green . . . . This will just go up and up in value. Speak to Santa nicely or just buy it Steve ! !
And I thought I paid a lot for mine!
Not sure it's worth quite that much but it will be a classic in years to come, and it wouldn't surprise me if it sold quite quickly. I think this is only the second green one to come up for sale for at least a year?
I'd be surprised if it makes anywhere near this. A gen 2 or gen 2 RS with 2 year warranty from OPC difficult to ignore at this money if you plan to use the car.
Then there are the technical superiorities.
http://fastestlaps.com/comparisons/porsche_997_gt3...
Chancing it a bit, but all it takes is one person who simply must have a green one.
It's Big Game Hunter or something on here isn't it, although I've heard the cars and garage are his dads?
IMI A said:

Surely technical superiorities are irrelevant? 993rs and 964rs' are technically inferior to any 997rs but it doesn't stop them commanding higher prices.

Yes suppose so in some ways but I'd still struggle as they're virtually the same car albeit the gen 2 is better! 993 and 964 aren't a fair comparison as they're different (air-cooled so to many people last of the real 911s) and rarer 911s.
Don't get wrong I'd buy the green 997 in a heart beat if I wanted one of these but would struggle to pay £4k more than the gen 2 RS for sale at Solihull. £85k is the green cars money IMO. Markets gone mad and I feel a few people and dealers are trying it on with over inflated prices at the mo which of course they have every right to but whats the point if the car does not sell? By way of example there was a low miles 996 GT2 up for £85k recently too. I'd be surprised if the green car makes more than mid 80s. the 996 GT2 was taken off the market after a few weeks.

It's good but it's not right.
Never let the facts get in the way of a good rumour so carry on.

Ah fair enough. I must be getting my wires crossed.
So there are two people in County Durham with both a green and an orange RS. What are the chances eh?
Are your cars and garage yours or your dads then? Don't understand what part is a rumour?
Merry Xmas anyway.
We'll given that I'm mad and it's my dream car I offered 97.5 for it. Doesn't make sense at that price I know but what can I say, I love Viper Green. I can only hope the seller comes to his senses.

PistolP OPC Reading quoted me £7k to paint a 993TT 'S' front to back in any colour I wanted and change all the records at the factory etc etc. End to end solution..
Pick your car and give to them for 2 months - Viper Green is no problem.

Why would anyone even do this? It would devalue the car in my view and in any case would never be worth as much as an original Kermit.
If the factory records were changed and a new V5 then issued to reflect this how would you know?

Given the limited number of green cars and the knowledge base on places like PH, it wouldn't be too difficult to get the original data.
I doubt Porsche would erase all previous data as well.
Unless it's done exceptionally well you can almost always tell if a car has had a full respray if you know where to look. Even if it's a glass out job.

Fair point. I'd forgotten about the anorak tendancies of the PH massive.
I can see 'loud' paint on a 7RS attracting a slight premium over say a silver or black example - no car wears proud a shocking colour scheme like an RS! But can't see why green is worth any more than orange
. 10/20/30 years down the line doubt it will matter a jot whether it's orange or green. Paying a huge premium for green is money that won't be recouped imho

The new V5 would show that it had had a colour change, wouldn't it? I bought an ex-police BMW diesel s
tter this year that has had a colour change from white to grey and it came up on both the HPI check and is listed on the V5.

Not recouped or even worth it. Very fickle future market place if your only differentiator is the colour...the reason a green gen 1 RS is rare is because not that many original owners specced the colour, thats all. And you don't have to be Einstein to work put why. Paying a ludicrous premium on the used market is just odd. Where did all this green premium stuff even come from, here on pH probably

Agree that Green is THE colour for a 997.1 GT3 RS
Only 11 green uk cars as far as I understand, I turned one down at 75k a couple of years ago as it would have stretched my budget a bit far, hindsight eh.
Don't beat yourself up. I reckon in reality its worth 80-85k but there aren't any about at the moment. There are even fewer people like me that will pay that sort of price.

Attraction is one thing...when you get " moist" do you then start reaching for your cheque book and a 30k premium?....Common sense would prohibit me and most from doing so, the few that would are few indeed.

Thats one, not many.
I am in the market for a 997.1 GT3 RS and I would also love a Viper Green one. This thread has me now seriously considering buying a BLACK one, which can be had in the 60-70k bracket, and getting it sprayed by someone like Porsche Reading. I doubt it would have any negative impact on the value of the car. There was recently a 996GT3 sold here which was converted to Viper Green by Malton, and it sold within a day of posting the advert. Personally as well, a freshly sprayed car can look amazing as there will be no chips and swirls to the paint, and will look like new i.e. better than any used Viper green! Porsche Reading have in fact color changed a number of CGTs as well, and these havent suffered in residual terms either.
97.5k is absolutely crazy, insane money for a color though. There arent many Pistolps in the real world, and Viper Green owners should be biting his hand off ! Santa must be real ...

So a good orange car with low miles would easily fetch 75k, a proper bare metal colour change would probably be 10k at least. So that's 85k. In my mind I am paying a 12.5k premium give or take. I'm told 911 aren't that easy to completely change colour properly. You can't compare a factory green car to a car that's been subsequently painted green when it comes to values. A CGT would be easier to change as it's made up of sections and comes apart easily.
Gotta love man maths.
You are paying a 22.5k premium over a Black/Orange car, assuming said cars actually sell for 75k which is a different debate :-).
You would possibly be paying 12.5k extra over a resprayed car, that itself may be worth less than the original Black/Orange car due to the fact that it had been.
Personally i'd buy a Gen2 RS or an Orange one and re model the kitchen.

What colour are you painting the kitchen?
For me an RS purchase is an emotional decision and colour plays a large part in that. If I really really wanted a Viper Green and had sufficient funds I'd make the stretch. Otherwise you'd have dropped £75k or whatever and still not be happy - man maths as you say.
I'd prefer one in black for daily use, stealth it, take the cage out and fit belts in the back for the kids. Madness I know, but then it's all personal taste right!

Pistopl ... with respect, your maths is wrong.
Buy a low mileage black car for 70k. Color change 10k. 70 + 10 = 80k. (In the trade, low mileage Black RS are selling nearer 60k).
So premium you are paying is 17.5k !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I do agree however a factory painted car is maybe worth more than subsequently painted car, however I would argue no more than 5k. Which means at best Viper Greens should not really command more than 85k subject to condition.
I would also argue you could buy a Gen2 RS at 90k and have that color changed to Viper Green for maybe 7k according to Murcielago and have a substantially better car!

The problem with trying to apply this sort of logic to these scenarios is that it is pure theory and what actually happens is raritys like this are bought on emotional factors, and those who have the money will pay what it takes.
Even if the premium is 17.5k, that is only about 12 months depreciation on a new 991 Carrera!

With you on that Simon. I viewed this back in 2008 and nearly bought it.
It won't appeal to many (most ?) but it's certainly subtle compared with many.
Personally I'd prefer it in BMW carbon or Sapphire black rather than gloss.
Black is a pain for daily use. I'd still pick green for daily or silver with orange highlights.
Agreed, black is a pain for a DD, but BMW Carbon or Sapphire black is slightly easier to maintain compared with straight gloss black in my experience.
Supply and demand. Everyone wants green and there are only 11 uk cars out there. Owners (like me) also don't want to sell , so they never come to market. If you want a green one, you have to pay the premium.
An RS is an emotive purchase. You're not buying a focus or a clio. If I had an orange one, I'd still be hankering for a green one. Doesn't matter that they are the same car!
Mine's a keeper, even if it does only get used for 2k miles a year!
Good luck to the chaps after one. You won't find a cheap green RS, but once it's in the garage, you won't regret it either!!

I'd personally aim for an orange one. Just as striking to look at and a good saving to be had. The black/orange looks good too but the silver/orange is a bit pants.
Silver doesn't look good with brightly coloured highlights
Silver
could
be the Holy Grail in years to come - rarest colour the 7.1RS was offered in. Even rarer than the rare green...

Probably very little, if anything. A 2.7RS is a 2.7RS.
And there are WAY more buyers than cars, thus the values.
Its not easy to put any logic to specifics at this level.
100%. Colour would be the least of a genuine buyer / collectors requirements.

Fair enough. But in 25 years' time, the choice is likely to be "do you want one?" Not, "what colour". Waiting for the "right car" in 25 years, could result in a very very long wait. That's why people become (are forced to be) agnostic about colour on real classics.
And rarity in itself does not mean a car is more desirable. Take the black and white car on PH, probably one of a kind, but that's not helped it to sell. Even the white one at JZ stuck around for a while.
Green just happens to be the right colour on the 7.1. And personally speaking, I think the orange is just as easy on the eye, but the market doesn't agree.
I wonder if Top Gear set off the green phenomenon?

But in 25 years' time, the choice is likely to be "do you want one?" Not, "what colour". Waiting for the "right car" in 25 years, could result in a very very long wait. That's why people become (are forced to be) agnostic about colour on real classics.

Time is a great healer of the pain of not being able to buy a green car
I remember Top555 (local to me) had an ultra-low mileage green 7.1RS approx 2 years ago. It seemed expensive at the time...
Interesting discussion on premium of colour.
To throw into the mix, I would have no hesitation of buying a colour changed car if it was fully documented and done to a high standard, especially by Porsche. Some very expensive exotica are often colour changed, in fact I am looking at a colour changed black F40.
Would I pay a significant premium for an original Kermit versus a clone ? A couple of grand maybe, nothing more. The fact is black/silver/orange cars would drive and feel the same as a Green one, so the premium should in theory be only the cost of a professional colour change. All the PH Viper Greens owners will say different of course ....
I am also having one of my cars currently detailed. They have recently resprayed/restored an Enzo. The finish is better than factory by some margin. You could argue that the value of that car has actually been enhanced!
Agreed a deal at 100k, you lot are thinking about it a lot more than I am. Its as simple as this, I want a green RS 7.1 and I had to pay 100k for it. Of course in my mind there is method to the madness but its pointless going into that as everyone else will have their opinions. Clearly a lot of people would do it differently, good for you! Personally, I'm delighted I got the car I've wanted for ages. It's more than I wanted to pay but being stubborn wouldn't have got me anywhere.

Congrats. No justification required whatsoever a car (or anything for that matter) is worth what somebody is prepared to pay for it. Medium to long term could even be a very shrewd purchase Enjoy

As an aside Viper Green cars are fastest!
It's not 'Viper'
and congrats pistolp
Oh what colour is it? Looks fantastic in the flesh - really gives the car exotica presence.
Glad you got what you wanted Pistol. Great car and colour.
IMI the colour is technically called Porsche Green nowadays. It's a modern take on the 70's Viper Green.
I still call it Viper as that's what I know it as.
Reminds me of my workmate Clive who had an old green Nissan Micra. He had a bump just outside work and the ambulance chasers claimed all sorts for him, the hungry git. He was then known as No-win no-fee Clive, in his compensation green Micra.
When do you collect the car then Pistol? Bet you can't wait. More wind and rain forecast mind, so you may want to hang fire for a few days.
It's the 4.0 RS that I don't currently have! Of the cars that I do own I'd say my favourite is the 997.2 GT3. Perfect really. The mk1 is also a very cool and good car. Amazing really how good it is. Mine has been Manthey'd but I'm tempted to restore it back to factory. The extra power does feel a bit aftermarket.
Congrats- it's a great car and looks stunning in the garage ! That won't lose money, even at £100k! All this talk about re-spraying a black or silver car's madness ! You've got an original Green GT3RS , one of very few worldwide !
I missed the original ad; is it a low mileage minter? Will you use it on track..??

How much for the less desirable orange one behind it?
Make me an offer somewhere in the region of £90k and we'll talk haha!
Like pistolp I have bought the colour I wanted, I didn't want Green, I wanted Orange and that's what I held out for... just sod's law after over a year of looking I buy one 30 miles away owned by a friend!!
All I can say about the sale of Kermit is Pete's potentially just done wonders for all RS values, after all was there not a similar situation that made 360CS values rise?

Rightly or wrongly I've been diplomatic about your SY CS PistolP.
Whilst it is a stunning example of a Mk1 CS, when I drove it the suspension/geo set up was poor and the KW's felt pretty hopeless compared to the Ohlins on my car.
Period.
The car's dyno sheet told a story too, that being it isn't making the power at the top end of the rev range that it should do (390hp iirc)
In my experience (I've driven five of them now) the K400 conversion tends to make the power delivery more linear than standard between 1000 & 6000prm (and a bit stronger between 3000-600rpm than the standard car too) but beyond 6k rpm it should rev manically and in a fashion considerably stronger than standard. Your car didn't.
As I understand it you know Steve McHale at JZM reasonably well ? I'd get the car into him and get it checked out to find if there's something amiss before removing the Manthey kit.
As for the KW's, I'd be tempted to remove them and fit standard dampers and springs, or alternatively go with something like Ohlins, Bilstein PSS9's/10's, or Ex-TC's.
Not such high £ for a low miles Kermitt if you are willing to sit on the left.
Approx £73k (but dunno if you'd be liable for vat)

If its a Swiss car and isn't taxes paid (which I won't be) then that's 87k asking - they will be cheaper in Europe. There's more of them and everything is more expensive in the UK, just look at the difference between UK and EU stradales!
It wasn't cheap but just looking at the pictures in that link makes me excited. So happy days.
Yes loving it thanks. Every time I see it I can't help but smile! It's going into Parr soon for a bit wizardry.....
Looking forward to a few track days etc this spring/summer

AH nice on matey you're building quite a collection. LHD in the UK not bother you?
For all the discussion on here about green being overrated (which is of course wrong!) I guarantee that every time you open your garage(s) it will be the one that makes you smile from ear to ear. Enjoy.

He is absolutely right.

Cross purposes on an old thread.
Pistolp has a RHD I believe.
Looks like LHD still for sale.

Only 11 green uk cars as far as I understand, I turned one down at 75k a couple of years ago as it would have stretched my budget a bit far, hindsight eh.
Anyone any idea how many Orange ones registered in UK ?
No idea but quite a lot of the production run are orange from what I've seen. No surprises, it looks awesome in orange too. I'd have happily bought an orange one now I look back.
mmm....difficult to get any solid knowledge on this. I have an Orange only because i wanted one ever since they came out, not a green person, but would of bought one only because of rarity, although orange seem to be keepers now !
Have had mine since new, and will hang onto it. I have a 3.8 white one too which is in every way a better car, but there is something emotive about the green colour. In Canada there are only a few Gen.1s of any kind, and the green was the least popular, now the most pricey.

I notice its not just the UK that is plagued with the dreaded speed humps!
Am on my sixth splitter. The descending ramps are deadly
