Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I am now pondering the alignment as I had a full geometry check before they replaced the control arms.....is this an issue - the Independent has not responded?

FWIW, Ray Northway is going to be doing mine in a couple of weeks & he reckons that an alignment check isn't required.

They seem very accurately made, but if you have changed all four I would get the alignment checked, just to be sure.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

7 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi, The front end of our 2000MY 996 has developed an annoying squeak, that's very apparent at low speeds through town. Is this likely to be the shocks or bushes? Our car will be in for its annual service in the next couple of weeks, I just wanted to check with other members first whether this is something they have had on their cars and what the cause and fix was. Thanks, Steve.

POST 2Original post

It'll most likely be the bottom suspension arm - about £140 a side + fitting.

POST 3Original post

I agree with Nick - it's a very common problem. Current OPC price is £156.05 +VAT - the latest version seems to have jumped in price by about £40! Allowing for club discount, an OPC seem to be cheaper than Eurocarparts at the moment.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Nick, Richard, Thanks for the information, I'll see what my local independent dealer quotes for fixing this when our car is in for service next week. Steve.

POST 5Original post

I have just paid £150 + VAT each for mine at my local Independent. I replaced all 4 as 2 were squeaking so it was preventative. Managed to negotiate just 1 hours labour though [ ]. I am now pondering the alignment as I had a full geometry check before they replaced the control arms.....is this an issue - the Independent has not responded?

POST 6Original post

They seem very accurately made, but if you have changed all four I would get the alignment checked, just to be sure. Really, they should have done a check after changing them. It does say so in the workshop manual.

POST 7Original post

FWIW, Ray Northway is going to be doing mine in a couple of weeks & he reckons that an alignment check isn't required.
