Mine also does it when cold - might change my oil next time!

Didn't Sid say in a recent post that he doesn't use Mobil 1 in older cars - too thin?

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi Everyone,
Apologies for posting again with an issue and rarely a solution.
Yesterday I took the car out after a 11 day layoff. What alarmed me was a fairly loud tapping noise that increased in frequency when the revs were applied. The sound seemed to be coming from underneath the engine on the drivers side.
As the car seemed to be going ok I decided to take her to operating temperature to see is this would stop the noise, which it did.
This morning started her again and no tapping. Not inclined to call the OPC as they'll have my car for 2 weeks and find nothing wrong most probably, but has anyone had a similar experience when they have left their car alone for over a week?
cheers
Dejan
Mine has been doing that for ages - only after it's been left at least overnight, but worse if left for a few days.
No idea what it is, but it soon goes away and doesn't appear to affect performance or anything, not using any oil at all - mystery :?: :?
Mine does the same........... typically worse when the car has been left overnight - sounds like a hydraulic tappet that takes time to pump up. Mine doesn't do it all the time - but can take a few seconds to go first thing in the morning
Mentioned it to the OPC at the recent service and the car is going back in to have it checked out (under wtty). They heard it and think it may be a cam chain tensioner - also hydraulic I understand.
Could this be a symptom of the superthin Mobil 1 0W40 leaking out of these hydraulic actuators overnight?

Cam chain tensioner sounds very likely to me... Too loud for a tiny little hydraulic tappet I reckon, and it does seem to sound as if it is coming from the end of the block, rather than either bank of cylinder heads...
Let us know the verdict when you get yours looked at please?
PS. Are these all 3.4 engines by the way?
No mine is the 3.6 litre, it didnt tick this morning when I started her up which makes me think that oil has drained down after 11 days and a bit of metal on metal action was going on until it warmed up and circulated around.
Just got my car back from OPC at the end of last week for replacement of cam chain tensioners to cure this fault.
Unfortunately, after leaving it for a day, it did it again. Seems to be worse the longer it is left. No problem afte 5 - 10 seconds, or when hot.
Car now booked back in for them to have another look. Hopefully whatever they find will be covered by the warranty.
Hydraulic tappet?
Funnily enough I have just had an oil change at the service by the OPC (Mobil 1), and am not sure but the noise seems worse since - but may be paranoia.
Apparently tappets are covered by the warranty, so provided they can work out which ones are causing the problem, maybe by a compression check.
It doesn't affect the performance, and doesn't do it when it's hot, so I'm not unduly worried that it's damaging the engine. It's just it sounds like a shagged out Ford Sierra when you start it!
PS OPC say that Mobil 1 is correct oil for this engine irrespective of mileage, and despite 10W40 being stated in the handbook.
I just wonder whether it is draining out of the tappets because it is too thin at 0W40
Any thoughts?
Sid, where are you when we need you?
