I'd say if you're fed up with changing gear, then the downside of slightly less raw performance will be easily outweighed by the extra convenience.

However, overall I think the tip wins out by a whisker but that's because I want an easy life these days and hate changing gear in traffic.

I still prefer a manual for those windy roads where you want to enjoy the driving experience and the 996 clutch is much lighter than previous generations; somehow a clutch and gear change make the experience more engaging.

The tip is great for poodling about and kickdown is pretty quick and I doubt you would notice any accelleration difference between auto and manual and that's using the auto, not the semi auto mode changing with the paddles on the steering wheel, which give even more control (but I hardly ever use them).

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi all
I am returning to Porsche ownership after a 3 year break and will be hopefully buying one in the next week or so. My last one was an early 996 C2 Manual Coupe and i loved it. I regret selling it most days.
My question today is "Is the Tiptronic really noitceably slower than the manual ?". Parkers & road test figures suggest a good 0.5 secs slower for the Tip. I know that 0-60 times arent the be all and end all but im trying to get a feel for how the tip would feel compared with the manual. I loved the raw driving experience of the manual i had but to be honest im sick of changing gear in my E46 M3.
Can the gears be held in a tip in the sdame way they can in a manual allowing spirited driving or lazy driving when using standard auto mode.
Im hoping to get a 2002 facelift car is th tip any better with the increased power car or just the same.
All comments and opinions very welcome
Thanks
Carl
Hi,
I have a 2001 996 C4 trip, owned it for about 4 months now, at first I have to admit I was disapointed in its performance, but I now realise that was because I was'nt getting the most out of it, for lazy driving the auto is fab, (the wife prefers it in auto awell) but if you do feel like pushing it a litlte, then onto trip mode, and let the gear box take control through the revs,, it will hold its gear until you red line.. then change up automatically unless you change it yourself. and the kick down is awesome..
enjoy.....
The raw published performance figures on a manual are very difficult for a typical owner to match, unless they have no mechanical sensitivity at all!
A tip's a different matter though- just plant foot and go!
The key difference is the lack of a gear vs manual, which might make it slower in some increments. Also the torque converter will soften the link between engine speed and road speed.
I'd say if you're fed up with changing gear, then the downside of slightly less raw performance will be easily outweighed by the extra convenience.
Get a Tip and you wont bother going back, my car had no problems staying with the likes of Sundeeps and Polars GT3's when we were going through the gears on the Autobahns.
Plus there isn't much to go wrong with them and they don't wear like a manual does and also no clutches to replace.
My experience of the 996 and 997 tip is that they feel very different to the experience of a driving a manual. Im sure there is a small performance loss with the auto but you also loose the feeling of having a car with a light fly wheel and the character it brings.
I have an auto C class merc and am well aware of the advantages but my own feeling is that you want to enjoy driving so there is no substitute for a manual box.
Thank you for all the comments guys, i must say i am sick of gear changing in the M3 (not as good as a 911 manual i know) and i think i will enjoy the ease of a Tip.
I am looking hard at a facelift 3.6 C2 Coupe Tip. I hope it turns out to be a wise choice.
Thanks again
Carl
I've had a '99 manual 996 coupe and currently own a '98 996 tip cab - both are awesome!
