Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I am new to porsche ownership and need some advice My 996tt battery keeps going flat. After speaking to a mate who has the same car, he explained he leaves the bonnet open to conquer the problem with the electronic bonnet latch problem, he has suggested disconnecting the negative cable from the battery. I tried that tonight and the alarm defend me, Is there a way I can disconnect the cable without the alarm going of Thanks in advance Cheers Geoff

POST 2Original post

Geoff, I think you need to find out why your battery keeps going flat. Perhaps it's past its sell-by date because it should last for a couple of weeks - at least - before becoming discharged. Alternatively, there may be an earth leak or perhaps something is remaining powered up when you've turned off the ignition. If you don't use the car very often and it's garaged, you should consider purchasing a battery conditioning charger. I'd certainly recommend the CTEK charger, but others are available. You can avoid the alarm going off by turning the ignition key to position #1 and then disconnecting the battery. I wouldn't recommend doing this though as you'll need to reset the windows, throttle, steering angle sensor, etc. [ http://www.porscheclubgbforum.com/tm.asp?m=770011 ]. Jeff

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi Jeff Thanks for the speedy reply The problem I have is I don't have a power supply in my garage for charging the battery' Do all them problems relate to a 2003 model 911 996,might be a good idea to get my battery checked, I am not a very mechanical person so would have no idea what would be draining the battery Cheers Geoff

POST 4Original post

As Jeff says, switch the ignition on, then switch it off, but don't remove the key. Then you can disconnect the battery without the alarm siren sounding. This is the document for the 996 which shows the effects of disconnecting the battery: https://www.porscheclubgb.com/legacy/clientftp/Register/996/tec_effects_of_disconnecting_battery.pdf . Don't be daunted by it. That is a worst case scenario. Once the battery is disconnected, be careful not to close the bonnet, otherwise you might have trouble opening it without power. But again as Jeff says, you need to find out what is flattening it.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for the replys Cheers Geoff

POST 6Original post

Geoff, Just to say that any reputable motor electrician or tyre and battery supplier should be able to check the battery for you. If the battery's not the problem then one of simplest things to do is to make sure that the microswitches controlling the bonnet, engine comparment and interior lights are functioning correctly; otherwise you're down to pulling fuses to see if the problem goes away. Good luck..! Jeff

POST 7Original post

Remember that when these cars were first around most insurance companies wouldn't touch them unless they had a tracker fitted. Which is of little use now unless you've re subscribed and can sometimes be hard to find as that's the idea. But still draining the battery.[ ]

POST 8Original post

Just a hint rather than saying help please in RE put a hint of the problem like BATTERY FLAT Any Garage will tell you the state of your battery. Of course you need have the Alternator checked as well Good luck

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Will remember that in any further posts Cheers Geoff

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Kind of strange. I don't use the car on a regular basis in the bad weather, it was left for a week with the bonnet catch set to open, went to garage had to open door with keys. Put key in ignition click vroom vrooom started first time, A chap I know mentioned these go into a sleep mode Is this correct? I don't think anything is draining the battery. It's more of the case it can sit there for upto two weeks not being used 😄

POST 12Original post

Correct. After 5 days the "plip" system to unlock via the button on the key is disabled - to save the battery... You have to unlock with the key in the door (this wakes the system up again), then you hit the button to disable the alarm. Then you can open the door.
